Re: Baptism by Fire - Zimmerit on Panther G
very interesting account MD, I'd heard about the fire hazard, and a captured T-34 was coated and tested without resulting in fire,so its possible there was a few reasons for it to be discontinued, the fact that magnetic mines/grenades were not used by the enemy to the extent the Germans did.and time it took to apply and dry,at this time the waffenamt gave many time saving orders about factory applied camo ie 3 camo colours on top of oxide instead of dark yellow base, and change to dark green primer/base coat,so time would have been a factor, the bit about it drying 3 hours shoots down my 24 hrs plus, but then again it was a test and it would only need to be touch dry and not painted prior to troop issue,I read somewhere the zimmerit had sawdust to thicken the compound ?

ps MD excuse me for being a plonker, after posting and re read your post and yes it said dry enough to take paint, shot down again!still not giving up about time factor, how long would it take to zim a Tiger II in manhours? Too long with the labour shortages at that time, the bit about the comb is good to know,I've used Tamiya set for 1/35 Tiger hull and it works well with sloppy compounds

I think you are on the right track Von Kraftwork , it was probably a combination of rumour and fear from the battlefield - who thinks striaght after their tank ahs been hit and set on fire ??
And as you say ...it makes the whole tank building process quicker if you leave at least that zimm stage out
How long to build a Tiger
