When i was a nipper I had a friend who's father used to make Greyhound muzzles. He had a frame that was the correct shape and he used to form piano wire around it and micro weld it in place. I know you are talking about a flat profile, but could you do something similar? Perhaps a strong flat frame with strong points on it that could have the peices in place under a small amount of tension then you could solder it up as you go. You could work with one long peice and thread around the pins. I'll do a sketch if you want.. :S

it is called stand off armour it prevents full contact with explosive apr shells forcing them to explode away from the hull so the plasma from the apr makes no contact with the hull surface preventing burn though

This kind of bar-armour also appears in some photos of Chally 2s in Iraq. It works the same way as the chain link fencing that was commonly used on allied vehicles in Vietnam. Check out photos from that war and it was fairly common practice to carry a roll of wire fencing to erect around the vehicle when setting up a night laager. It was a cheap and incredibly simple defence against the HEAT warhead of RPGs. The wire mesh would either cause the electric fuse of the warhead to short out and the round would drop to the ground as a dud, or, if it did detonate, as bubblejack says, it would be away from the hull reducing the likelihood of penetration. It can be seen on the Walker Bulldogs used in filming 'Full Metal Jacket'.
