Here is my new work in progress Tiger II Porsche Turret full option panzer.
It depicts the Porsche Turret King Tiger at Bovington Tank Museum, UK,
well kinda of. The museum's tank was the second Tiger II prototype, vehicle V2. This panzer was in service with Heeres Waffenprufungamt (Army Ordnance Testing Department), Sennelager, Germany. It has 18 tooth sprockets, early pattern track and no Zimmerit in 1945 and probably never saw combat.
I did stray a bit and added Schwere-Heers-Panzer-Abteilung 503 unit markings when fighting around Caen in July 1944.
This is a show and tell build with Daryl Turner doing all the cool internal work and here are the "runners" features.
Turret Top:
• The turret top is removable from the base and is attached by magnets.
• There is a clever rear mounted latch system that gently breaks the turret top from the turret base magnets.
• The emitter receiver is mounted on a stand that is attached to the base, centered under the commanders cupola.
Elevation Unit:
• The Tamiya elevation unit is mounted to the left side and rear of the recoil unit on the turret base.
• Under the elevation unit, on the turret base is a plastic bridge and metal plate that the elevation unit screws to.
• The Tamiya elevation unit, using a metal elevation arm, lifts the metal recoil plate up & down that carries the Tamiya Pershing Recoil unit.
• The Pershing recoil unit mounts to the plate using the two stock mount holes.
Recoil Unit:
• The Pershing recoil unit is attached to the plate (with 2 mounting screws using the normal mount locations).
• The elevation plate is attached to the trunnion with an "L" arm, Tamiya style using 2 cap screws.
• There is a "C Shaped" mount plate attached to the end of the trunnion sleeve (2 cap screws) that the Elevation "L" Arm: mounts against.
Trunnion:
• The main gun barrel freely fits and slides through a well mounted metal trunnion.
• The cannon trunnion assembly is a custom machined metal sleeve for the barrel to slide through and the recoil base plate to mount up against.
• The trunnion sleeve is about 3/8" material (thick enough to attach brackets), machined down in front to accept the outer sliding mantlet and metal sleeve assembly.
Mantlet and Metal Sleeve Assembly:
• The mantlet is modified to mount to the sleeve.
• The mantlet and metal sleeve freely slides over the main gun barrel.
• The "mantlet sleeve assembly" is removable and mounts to the trunnion using a spring loaded indent screw and clicks & locks into place.
• There is an "L" bracket mounted on top of the rear of the trunnion.
• The adjustable indent locking spring tensioned screw sits atop the trunnion sleeve, angled off to the right side.
• Mount the mantlet sleeve assembly by gently fitting the end "over" the trunnion sleeve lip and rotate slightly to the right to "click" and lock in place, dismount by rotating "left" in reverse order.
HL Rotation Unit:
• The HL rotation gear ring is centered and flush mounted with 2 screws on a circle cut, flush fitting clear acrylic plastic plate, that is glued mounted to the Tamiya turret base interior (you know, the big open round part).
• The rear portion of the HL rotation gear ring has been reshaped into a gear teeth for 360 degree turret rotation.
• The HL turret rotation unit motor sits atop a spacer glued to the to the underside of the rear deck.
• The spacer is, about 3/8" thick piece of acrylic plastic, worked to shape, to following the form of the HL rotation unit motor housing.
• The plastic spacer is glued to the deck (CA Glue or Weld On).
• The HL turret rotation unit motor housing is mounted to the spacer with three screws, to a rear deck location.
• The part is replaceable.
Hull:
• Daryl Turner custom built basic hull bracing and a DMD carrier tray.
• DT Gearbox mount brace.
• ETO Gear Reduction Units and Black Long Can Motors.
• DT Gearboxes reworked with bushings and bearings.
• DT Custom designed gearbox debris and splash shields.
• Custom fitted metal sponson shields.
• Nicely routed hull wiring.
• Metal Glacis Plate Guides from Patrick (Manheader on eBay).
• Hull mounted Gearbox Drive Shaft Support Bearings.
• Road wheel and rear idler bearings.
• Schumo metal fender mount brackets.
• Schumo engine vent photo etched grills.
• Tamiya Battle Unit.
• Impact tracks and sprockets.
Metal Barrel:
• I found the Porsche turret barrel at Welsh Dragon Models in the UK, but the recoil rear end is modified.
• A King Tiger flash unit is installed in the barrel.
• The metal muzzle brake is a "careful now" removable press fit (not glued in place).
