Here's my latest results with this project :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzPPS66rVTk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That system is amazingly simple : A mini smoke unit ( made with a discarded H.L. smoke unit and a 5 Volts mini fan ) ,
a pipe system ( made of 1/4 " O.D. and 3/16 " O.D. flex straws ) , a 240 Ohms 1/4 Watts resistor in line with a 3 mm high intensity yellow led ( to replace the high voltage flash unit ) ...

The smoke unit is running with a high efficient 18 Ohms 1 Watts Wire Wound resistor , ( I'm also using the same type of resistor for the exhaust smoker . The current consumption at 7.2 Volts is 0.4 Amps , or 2.88 Watts for each smoke unit ; for a total load of 0.8 Amps , or 5.76 Watts for 2 smoke units ; which is pretty reasonable , considering the amount of smoke produced ....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Rb-CqYex3k" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I enlarged the air intake and double the exhaust of the smoker to get maximum air flow ..
I tried to put the mini fan away from the smoke chamber to minimized the smoke leakage through the air intake when the system is at rest ..
I put the pipes in a slope with a drain to prevent clugging by smoke fluid liquid residue ...

So this design is working right now and I'm ready to proceed to long terms field testing ....

By no means do I believe that this is the only way to get the gun smoking , nor is it the best way ; but in my humble opinion , this is a small step in the right direction ....It does prove that it is possible to get the gun smoking repeatadly ....

The system is customised to fit the turret of my Panzer IV , so a bigger turret , like a Tiger ; should be even easier to work with ....

Here's a few pictures , with comments ; to help ....

You may have already considered this idea but, if you used an airsoft unit and introduced smoke to the side of the breach in front of a bb pellet, I am wondering if the pellet would blast the smoke out in a more realistic manner or maybe the blast would be to great and dissipate the smoke when exiting the barrel, hmm needs trying, personally I would not be able to rest until i perfected this, and for that reason i must leave mine alone until i have time to spend on it, but what a great idea and very well done with your achievements so far, looks pretty convincing as it is. look forward to seeing test 7.

I have given it some thoughts also ; but I find the air-soft system kind of bulky and what I would gain in realism as for the smoke effect would be lost by the lack of recoil of that system ...
It would be interesting to see the smoke deflection caused by the pellet though ...
As for now , I am experimenting by replacing the mini-fan by a CO2 cartridge to get more of the initial " shock-wave " effect ....It will also solve the problem of the pipes clogging with liquid residue caused by the smoke fluid ....

I had one of dem finkin' moments too .
    Image
      For my H/L Tigger
        A - top view of gun , flash buried in mantlet , a clear plastic barrel acting as a 'fibre optic' .
        • B - Airsoft final gearshaft drives a cam against the lever giving a fast / slow action (return spring and flash microswitch not shown for clarity)
        C - connect a bleed pipe from the smoke unit , And . . . . . :think: :D

        Hello Kids,

        I've been off this forum for way too long and see I've missed out on a great deal. I really an interested in these smoking guns. We just need to get a good solid plume at firing. The NEAD club has kept me very busy and I hope to get back on my smokng gun project soon. We had many smoking tanks a the recent Danville Tank Extravaganza. It was great to see smoke pouring out of KO'ed tanks. Very COOL!

        It is nice to be back...thanks Bear Bob Held, NEAD CO

        Here is a link to some of the action:

        Ingenious! I have been considering the airsoft-smoke option myself but this looks great with the recoil.

        Here's an update on my never ending smoking gun project ....
        I simplified the system to the bare minimum and the results are interesting so far ....
        Here's a picture of the mod. and a short video ... 8) 8)

        Now that is very much better, well done and a super effort, much more like the real thing .......
        and I take it the recoil pushes on the airbag ?...............
        Fleshy.....................................................
