Ironically, we are going full circle.

I hunt with black powder. The old style muzzleloader rifles were usually 45, 50 or even 54 calibre rounds. Of course, with black powder you can kill about as far as you can throw the ball, but the calibre is the same. I myself have a Lyman Trade Rifle, 50 claibre and is a reproduction of the rifles that were traded to the indigenous population in return for land and such. It is a fantastic and fun rifle.

Somehow I think that this rifle does a bit more damage, though....

Hi Guys confirmed kill at a range of 2,000 yds by U.S sinper in Iraq took out a shooter who was firing at some marines .it was on future weapons it will also go through a 9" block wall at over a mile or 1/2" of steel.

Been wiki-ing and found the longest confirmed sniper kill goes to Crpl Rod Furlong of the Canadian Forces during Operation Anaconda in Afganistan 2002. The distance was measured at 2430 meters (thats 2657 yards or 1.509 miles!) with a TAC-50 rifle, similar to the Barrett. He recieved a Mention in Dispatches and a US Armed Forces bronse star.

1.5 miles away!  Talk about "I didnt see it coming"

If you go to wikipedia and type in  .50 BMG-----or just 50 cal gun----you will find a lot of reading material if you like guns.They list all the ammo types and guns ever used in any military around the world.Very interesting site to find out accurate info------

P.S. Even with a high grade pair of field glasses a man is not very big at that distance,so you can imagine what a high quality scope was used to make that shot.A lot of skill and most likely a bit of luck also,not trying to take away anything from the guy for making such a shot.

I'm sure us Brits of a certain age (former sericemen that did a tour in Northern Ireland in the '80's espcially) remember the (*censored for extreme language!*) IRA sniper that used to hide out on the Republic side of the border and pick off British Army servicemen patrolling from a considerable distance (2 miles?) with a Barret light '50.
Nothing funny about a coward who picks people off when hiding in a village that can neither be bombed flat by the RAF (not that they would ever consider it - those guys are better than that by far) nor searched door to door by the SAS... (which is a pity!)
