Matt and scooby can i ask a question?
why are we still having hosting issues or is this not an issue im confused ??
after the last forum crash i thought we were going for unlimited storage and hosting thios obviously isnt the case ref the last site down
so another question if we havent bought and paid for hosting with unlimited hosting and storage where are the donations and ad monies going?

yes Matt and scooby where is the advert and Donation money going, I hope towards the funding of the site, because Rob asked me if I would mind using My credit card to pay for the hosting of rctankregiment.com, and it cost less than 40 pounds.fv432 wrote:Matt and scooby can i ask a question?

I was willing to make a substantial donation of 300 pounds toward this site, to make sure that it had some decent hosting for the next few years, (money from a lotto win), but after the last crash I felt unable to do so because I did not feel that I would get a decent return on the donation, because of too much down time and too many .com,.co.cc,.co.uk changes and too many excusses about the hosting site being over run by picture size, chat ect. ect.
some members do not realise that this site was started a an IT project for you exams a school when you were 13 years old and I commend you on doing a great job of setting the site up.
I remmember Robs first post on RCU which lead to this site being set up and some of the original members being banned opf there (me included), but some where along the way, the dirrection seemed to have been lost with the .XXX exstention being changed too many times through no fault of you own Matt, what ever happend to norse where did he go.
i thought he set up the .com sites hosting.
Re: Attachment Size Limit
Scooby is a reseller, when we talk about the 'host' being bad, it's the people that Scooby rent's space off's fault.
I pay £18 a month for the rental of this VPS, and Scooby pays that to the reseller of the VPS, basically. (Think of it like a food chain... Server - 5 or more VPS's - we rent 1 of those VPS's.)
The first crash was a terrible host that just didn't communicate, and didn't tell me that the .com domain was expiring, so i didnt get a chance to renew it. Then i moved to Scooby (after meeting him at college) and that move lost most of the pictures as you know. Then when things were sounds with Scooby, i realised that space on the server was becoming very short because everybody was uploading ridiculously sized images. So i limited it, and that caused another great cafafle. Then, the more recent crash - was when the reseller that Scooby used kicked me off (through him) because we were using too much resources up on the "shared server". So Scobby instead moved to reselling VPS's, and we now rent one of them.
Now although the VPS is more expensive, it has more space and more bandwidth - and we dont need to worry about getting kicked off for using too much of the servers resources because a VPS acts like a whole server, so we have to manage and maintain the forum to not exceed the limitations of the resources on the server that are allocated to our VPS.
The donations and advert go towards the £18 a month, plus about a further £10 or so a year for the domain. (That's around £226 a year).
Hopefully that answers the questions regarding the cost and crashes.
(p.s. Rob, this is not a hosting issue, this is a good thing because it means people can upload larger images).

Excusses ? We state the facts, nothing more - nothing less. If you choose to think of those as us making excuses, then keep it to yourself, because frankly I don't want to hear it.too much down time and too many .com,.co.cc,.co.uk changes and too many excusses about the hosting site being over run buy picture size, chat ect. ect.

just my ho
just my ho
Re: Attachment Size Limit
There's no such thing as unlimited space, read their terms and conditions and they will have a lot stricter rules about resources, some even limit the number of files you can have so you don't go using up too much. These are also shared hosts and we have outgrew them because of the resources that the site uses.fv432 wrote:as ive said already a host that does have unlimited space isnt hard to find and a lot less than £226 a year??
