Hi,

Regarding your KV1, don't neccessarily blame Heng Long for the miss naming. They probably got some of their info from a museum somewhere and museums do make errors. There is at least one tank on display at Bovvy that has been wrongly labelled and the T54 at the House of Terror in Budapest is actually a T55.

Regarding counting track links I would consider this perfectly normal for somebody in the early stages of Armouritis. You know when you have passed the point of no return when you do something about it and alter the tracks to suit. Of course this means modifying the idlers and possibly the tub as well, but you don't care because you have Armouritis...........

Now I have a problem. When my T55 kit arrives I want to model the above mentioned in Budapest. But do I build it as the T55 it really is, or do I convert it to the T54 it is supposed to be? Do I detect the later stages of Armouritis here?

My main "love" is aircraft modelling.

Three years ago whilst at the Lincs Lanc Members Day(we're the BBMF's supporters club)
held at RAF Coningsby(home of the BBMF),one of the pilots' gave a superb display.

He is Sqn Ldr Clive Rowley,now retired from the service.
It was his very last display on The Flight,and as such given the privelidge of leading the
day's display and giving a solo display to mark the occaision.
His chosen steed was Spitfire MK356,a 1943 built Mk.IXc.

At the following year's Members Day,Clive was there in his civvies as just another spectator,
I got him to autograph my yearbook on a picture of him in MK356 doing his last display.
I made a promise to myself to make a model of "Clive's Spitfire"as she was on that day that he gave his last show.

As I said,"his" Spitfire for the day was MK356,a Castle-Bromwich built 1943 vintage Mk IXc.
She was restored to flying condition during the 1990's after her 25 year hiatus on display
in RAF St Athan's museum.

I couldn't use any old Spitfire kit,it had to be a Mk.IX,but research soon showed that MK356
wasn't now just an "ordinary Mk.IX,she'd been restored with the e-wings from another Spitfire
not her own c-wings for starters,and they were clipped too!!.
She was now technically an LF.IXe,and that was just caused by the wing change
There were other modifications that had been done that have had to be researched and incorporated so that "Clive's Spitfire"can be portrayed as accurately as possible.

So there you go,we all suffer from rivetcounteritus

Sounds like a challenging build,,would love to see pics of it..

I'm not a 'planer' but i will confess to having a very large soft spot for our WW2 flying icons and have stood at the end of the runway at coningsby whilst the lanc has taken off,,its amazing how it gets off the ground.lol

If all goes well it should be doing a fly-by in dover on sunday.

Sounds like the Spit had a few mods during her service life. I might be wrong ( I usually am ) but weren't the clipped wings introduced around mid 1944?

Lovely aircraft, its great listening to the memories of the ever dwindling number of the guys who flew them on the TV. Its a great pity that Mitchell did not survive to see what his aircraft did, and what it became.

You know you're in trouble when you don't need to do any research to know that the HL KV-1 is a KV-1e (which rolled out of the factory around march 1940).

The clipped tips were introduced for the early c-wing around 1942 on the Spit Mk.Vb to try and help it combat the Fw.190 which completely outclassed the Vb.

The Mk IX generally didn't have the clipped c-wing fitted,the e-wing,introduced as you say,in '44,came with either clipped,standard or extended tips and was usually fitted onto the Mk.XVI(Mk.IX fitted with a Packard Merlin 266)to give LF,F or HF designations.

Some c-wings were produced with the extended "pointed"tips fitted especially for the
HF Mk.VI/VII series of Spit high altitude fighters.
This wing also had a limited armament fitted comprising 2 X 20mm cannon and 2 X.303 in.
machine guns giving that mark of Spit a lighter load to help them reach higher altitiudes.

"Clive's Spit" has had a few mods "post" wartime service since her re-build.
She's actually MK356 and has never been out of the RAF since she was originally built.
