They are a pain, but once you get in the swing they become easier. My tip is to use a toothpick dipped in wated to place and smooth the Milliput, its much easier than brushes of a craft knife.

I use a small screwdriver and water to place the Milliput then a piece of brass rod filed to shape to get the weld shape.

Well after stripping off the odd colour camo I have managed to base it up in XF59 , should I now give it a coat or two of Klear or a coat of Humbrol acrylic matt before attempting camo again ??
