Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
Re: Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
I don't think the servo relay approach will work for airsoft, because we don't have the necessary functions for the servo outputs to turn it on when the cannon is fired and then to turn it off when the airsoft limit switch has been tripped.
It will be easier to simply control the relay by the airsoft port directly. Just get any generic automative relay, and connect the two relay coil terminals (polarity doesn't matter) to the NEG and POS pins of the Airsoft header on the TCB. Your higher voltage power to the airsoft motor will be run through the relay's COM and NO terminals.

Well, technically it's not using airsoft. I think it shoots 8mm pellets, but I'm not sure how it's wired up. If' it's wired the same as the airsoft circuit then I would say Luke is probably right.

Re: Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
It is basically a large metal version of the HL Airsoft unit. It’s got a large motor that pulls the plunger back and a cutoff switch that it hits when the plunger is pulled all the way back.
It shoots 9mm “Airsoft” pellets, which I can only find off of AliExpress. When you leave them exposed to the air for a long time they get squishy like a soft rubber ball.

Re: Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
Okay, I’m going to give this a shot, I’ve got the OpenPanzer in the mail, so I need:
A heavy duty bidirectional ESC for the drive motors? I’m not sure how many amps they use, but I’m working on that.
I need three other ESCs (traverse [2.2A] elevation [0.57A], Airsoft plunger [0.76A])
A generic automotive relay
I need a sound card from DasMikro? Do I have to load my own sounds or do they come preloaded? I’ll look into this today.
Anything I’m missing?
If anyone has any ESC recommendations I’m all ears.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
Hi Jib, yes you need bidirectional ESCs for the drive motors and the turret motor (4 in total). Note that many RC car ESCs will have a brake functionality, which we do not want, so you should choose ESCs without that or at least with the option to disable it. You are also going to have to find ESCs that can handle your source voltage of ~40 volts, and that may prove difficult, I don't know of any other segment of the RC hobby runnning such high voltages and therefore there probably aren't going to be a lot of options.
I just checked the Dimension Engineering Sabertooth dual motor serial drivers, and they are only rated to 30 volts, so even those won't work. Otherwise they probably would have been the best option.
You do NOT need an ESC for the Airsoft plunger. It will only be on or off - and the relay is what will be turning it on or off.

Re: Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
So for driving I have an ESC in mind. It just has connectors for the battery and motors, and then two servo outputs, steering and acceleration.
So with the TCB would I even connect this to the board, or would I just feed the ESC servo outputs into the DasMikro, and then into the receiver, bypassing the board completely?

Okay, never mind I see, the ESCs will plug into the DasMikro, then to the TCB, then use the serial out on the TCB to the receiver.
So assuming the ESC servo outputs at Motor 1 and Motor 2, where would you connect these and the traverse and elevation on the DasMikro Mini? How do you get barrel and machine gun firing sound?

Re: Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
So I know you use the Sabertooth for driving, but would their SyRen 10A be a good fit for traverse (24v motor getting 12.9v and up to 2.7a currently) and elevation (24v motor getting 12.9v and up to 0.57a currently)?
The regenerative motor thing scares me, wasn’t sure how that would work with this set up.

Re: Looking for control unit for 1/8 scale all metal model
I'm kinda confused at to what you are asking. ESC ports Motor A and Motor B would not be used in your setup as they are limited to 2A as they are ESC ports. The external drive ESCs would be connected to the servo ports 1 and 2. Servo Ports 3 and 4 are the traverse and elevation. Port 5 is recoil. Ports 6,7, and 8 would be for connecting the sound card.Jib wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 12:13 pm Okay, never mind I see, the ESCs will plug into the DasMikro, then to the TCB, then use the serial out on the TCB to the receiver.
