I can see the point if people are not following the rules of the event. The folks here in TX don't have a hard fast set of rules for battling. All of my battle tanks have either Tamiya or Clarks in them with the weight setting setup to the proper type of tank. Some of the folks in our group battle with HL based electronics. It causes issues because I can only shoot every X seconds and take X hits, but they can fire as fast as they want and take more hits. Plus their tanks don't register hits as well as mine do. So yeah, I can feel the frustration in that. I am one of those guys that will spend a lot on his tanks because they are all built to a high standard. I personally wouldn't build a Tiger that zips around the field firing every second just to be competitive because I do think the "spirit" of a highly detailed tank is not running around at those speeds. I guess I would agree that there have to be some limitations or people get mad.

That being said I did build a KV-2 that zips around, but it was in 1/6th scale and built for paintball combat where all the tanks zip around. Details were optional as paintballs tend to blast delicate parts off tanks. That was the expectation. So I guess as long as the expectations are met for all the players, then it's all good.

I once calculated that I had $1500 invested in just one of my Shermans (and I'm sure Tom can tell you that I have many), so I'm certainly in no position to complain about anyone spending excessive money on their hobby
I just didn't spend that with the intention of needing to be better than anyone else

Isn’t it possible, or am I mistaken, to convert Heng Long tanks to the Tamiya combat system?

You will need to replace the HL control boards with a compatable one for full 'Tamiya Compliant' status - either Tamiya DMD/MFU, El-Mod or Clarke.
I beleive that the latest and greatest HL boards can give and recieve hits, but as Tankme said, they are not fully compliant for what would be considered a 'club spec' battle tank during the club hayday - but right now, I'm not sure who actually cares about that stuff?

It’s hard to say. I’m told there are clubs and active battles, but getting specifics has been.., challenging. I would like to work on setting up a battlefield once I’ve found new digs.

The East Coast US clubs pretty much follow the Tamiya standard, but it seems the Cali clubs seem to just let people "run what they brung" as we say. It really depends on the club. I may build a HL driven tank just to play with my club as I have a bunch of those MFUs laying around at this point.

I've not got a sense of the UK standard. Appears to be IR, for the most part. Heng Long common? Continental looks to use BBs more.

There is no UK standard. I am familar with 3 clubs over here, 2 are not interested in US style battling and the 3rd was not interested in US style rules...

I tried hard to get this going when I came back from my work stint in Detroit: Where I had spent a year or so in the local Club before leaving, made the trip to Danville and was able to see first hand how the RCACN rules worked (if you ignore some of parts of those tables that were blatantly written to benefit those writing them *cough* King Tiger has the same turret rotation rate as an MBT *cough*) to make for a level playing field, how the 'fun run' rules for tank builds were really easy to impliment and validate, and tell people how much fun I had when I was involved there.

BUT
One of 4 attitudes prevails over here:
1) "How dare you tell me how to enjoy my hobby (largly expressed by people who had no intention of taking part in organised battles ANYWAY  )"
2) 'Rules stiffle innovation' - this results in the previously mentioned "if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying" Panther build...
3) "Our only experience of battling is unorgnaised free-for-all's between 3 or 4 tanks, which does not excite us" (the chairman of my current club is supportive of people being able to do what they want, but they don't want to battle - leading horses to water and all that good stuff...)
4) We are not interested at all...

As I have said on a previous thread, I could turn up to my local club meeting with a RCACN complaint (and in most cases inspected - I took the better part of a dozen to Danville!) tank for every member, and they would still not be interested. I have largely given up and started making rc trucks and diorama peices instead.

That's really unfortunate. I had hoped very much to find a club for battling in the UK. But if all anyone wants to do is drive them in circles on parade....
