Very, very easy mistake. Nobody should be expected to remember that. Fun fact: the Italians captured a battalion full of them at one point. They described the trucks as "the worst we'd ever seen." Which is really saying something given the civilian trucks the Regia Esercito was normally consigned to use!

I expect the Italians were commenting on the condition of the trucks after the Soviets had been using and abusing them for awhile. My understanding is that the Internationals, Studebakers, and GMCs sent to them performed remarkably well given the low octane fuel they were fed, and minimal maintenance provided.

No, they're speaking of locally built trucks in this instance. Particularly the Zils. American trucks, Hungarian Raba Botons, German Opels, were prized and happily stolen.
