Have to admit I was rather excited to get this started, was up just after midnight (on the 1st) and worked all day. I managed to get some card wrapped around some exhaust tube in some boiling water and some laminated card on the lathe for the hatch before finally fading. Was up early today. I have always had an issue sleeping when I had an idea on the brain and since this is a fun/work it out build, it may be some time till I get normal rest.

Not sure if they called it a conning tower, work bucket or turret, but I'm going with turret. It was bolted to the hull (did not rotate). The forward ring was open and the hatch was referred to as an escape hatch. The big ring mounted a .50, the hatch had no MG mount. Later in the war some improvised covers for the large ring appeared. As I said earlier, most of these were reworks, meaning they had a previous job as a combat or training tank. So in addition to the .50 up top they all retained the hull mount .30, normal crew arms and an 81mm mortar on the front for smoke rounds.

Made the antennae mount out of the oil drum that comes with the HL M4A3. I had cut the ends off and made seats for some of my open fighting compartment builds and saved the left over tubes. Some added Bondo to get a bit of a taper. The ventilators are the rear vents on the HL 105mm turret. I've converted a few to low bustle and saved a couple of the ventilators. Made some hinges but still have some shaping to do on the tops of the narrow hatches. Next I made a second turret base (the first one was just a tad too small). Only four of the bolts go into the hull, the rest have been cut and filed flush. Lastly, I've cut the slot in the front of the hull where the cable would be routed when the winch is used as a drag line. Not a great shot but the hinged cover is in the second picture.

Ok so Eric is going to finish first…

In all honesty I wanted to play fair. So I struggled to Not do anything till the 1st. But I cheated. I knew I was going to have to work all day till late yesterday sooo I dismantled it Tuesday evening when I had time. I promise I won’t bend the rules again…

No I won't finish first. Yes I'm putting in a bunch of time now, but soon I'll divert to something else. I have been very excited to get started, bought some brass work 2nd week of October when dog sitting in OKC. I still haven't even ordered my HL M4A3.

But yes, I've been researching since the rules were stated and I jumped in about 1 AM yesterday, and faded around 9:30 PM. Had about 3 pots of coffee yesterday, on my second today and I have the 12 cupper. Started about 4 AM this morning.

And remember, IT'S NOT A RACE it is for fun and learning!

Dude I’m so sorry if you misunderstood me. I’m totally joking.

But on the serious side. If I didn’t get a head start, when I got home last night from work, we lost electricity from 9pm till 1am so I wouldn’t have gotten anything done anyway.

And I am equally as excited about this build. It’s all about fun. Sorry if my sarcasm got the best of me.

No, no. I about spit my coffee on the keyboard again! Great laugh!

But in the spirit of trying to finish first (day after tomorrow).... :D

I want the crane to be workable including the drum on the drive sprocket that tugs the crane from the stored position to crane mode. So the inside bracket is brass 1.8mm the out side will be 2mm styrene card. I did cut a couple mms off the bottom of the brass bracket once I fitted it to the hull. I will make a template once the epoxy is cured to insure the other side goes on even.

About 30 hours in the past two days....I'm done

Mounts are in and that weird stagger is correct. The pictures I started this thread with show one of the pilots. It had a smaller diameter boom legs and the mounts stood straight up. Later pilots and production models (welded hulls) had the outer leaning forward, inner moved forward and the boom diameter was increased. The cast hull mounts stood straight up but production models were slightly forward of the pilot rigs. Creating the jig from the first mount, and where is stands now.

Thanks to you all for the comments. The past two days were long, and I tended to open the forum just long enough to post. Did a fair amount of reading but not much in my thread. Sorry if anyone feels their comments were ignored.

I have breakfast and a shower ahead and then back to the project.
