Doorstep milk deliveries, no matter how bad the weather. Frozen milk that forced the cream 2" out through the foil cap. We had to thaw the milk out before we could pour it on our cornflakes.
My dad was a milk delivery boy during the 60's so he's told me all the horror stories of the winters back then.

It was '63 wasn't it, or '61? It was the first winter that I can remember and at the time it started off as great fun, but then became a bit of a nightmare. Well it would do when you open the front door and the snow is has drifted 3ft above your head?? We had to dig our way out of the house every day. There was still snow on the ground in May/June. It simply didn't thaw for weeks, all of the roads were sheet ice (no gritting lorries or snowploughs in those days).

For me, I remember the playground had a sandbox- a real sandbox that was 12 feet long and 8 feet wide with a roof over it. If we found some cat crap in it, we just flicked it out with a shovel or stick and went back to playing! The swings were chain hung and there was no rubber hose over it either. If we were stupid, we pinched skin and got a blood blister which we would show off to everyone! And we had see-saws (or teeter totters, if you prefer) - two of them. And we went out to play after breakfast and did not have to check in until Mom called for lunch, then out to play again until dinnertime! And then we went outto play again! No video games, no TV (which was black and white until the mid '70's when our B&W died) unless it was one of the handful of shows we were allowed to watch, no playing couch potato either! And we were sick maybe two days out of the entire year, and that was without the "benefit" of antibacterial soap, handi-wipes, Flintstone chewables, etc!
We are creating a race of bloody wimps and wet noodles nowadays!
(ok, rant mode is now off....)

My childhood was the early seventies building carts from a bit of wood and old pram wheels stuck on with flattened beans tin and nailed half way down the first hill test drive you wished you fitted brakes but it did'nt stop you doing it again. In the summer I went out with a old jam jar to see how many bees and wasps I could catch by lunch time the jar was crammed with them. One of the houses I stayed in did'nt even have a toilet it was outside in the close and everyone used it even old drunks that couldnt wait till they got home there was no toilet paper it was torn strips of old news paper I remember I was up in my grans she had her own loo and when I came out of the toilet she asked if I washed my hands and I said I did'nt need to as I did'nt have any ink on my fingers. The kids these days don't know they are born my kids have x box 360 ps3 wii psps laptops and always moan they are bored (if only).

To me the 50's and 60's was the best times, and I do miss the life style during those years.During those years people still had respect for themselves and most important, for others.I do miss the good old days and it is fun to reflect back on those days.
