I had already noticed your name before... was wondering if you were actually German. But the few German lines you wrote aren't even that bad ;)
It's certainly a hard language to learn and even for most Germans difficult to master.

Melmondt, I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin US, at that time a city of, among others, strong German ethnic heritage. Yet I never heard so much as one sentence of German. I studied German for four years in an American high school (ein Art Realschule) and a few semesters in college. Through my years of work, I edited a few translations of German monographs on agriculture and then spent three years translating five of Schopenhauer's monographs for Oxford and Cambridge. Unfortunately, I have been in Germany, or any place where German is spoken for less than two weeks, and that was fifty years ago.

It's never too late to make one's dreams come true ;)
I'm sure you'll find the possibility to go somewhere where German is spoken for a longer period of time.
I'm very impressed you have a PhD in (whatever Rhetorik means in English :D ).

I can only hope someday to return to Germany. I enjoy good health, but not so much money as my hobbies might seem to suggest.

I'm sure it would be worth the effort!

I heard that Germans are actually quite friendly to tourists from fellow NATO countries... ;)

I have to agree there mate. I went through in 09 and despite my best efforts, their English was way better than my German, but they appreciated me having a reasonable go at it !!
Very helpful and polite.
I will say though that from wherever you are , if you are polite , you generally receive that back, regardless of the language barrier.

Nice to hear. Maybe you already know it, but in Germany everybody learns English from third grade on. :)
By the way, I really like your tank collection. It's pretty exotic!

I have a great idea! Let's start a "Go Fund Me" page to see if anyone is dumb enough to send us all money to meet in Germany, tour the museums, buy RC tanks, have a battle day, try various beers... ...think it will work?

Haha, sure it will. You will always find people who are dumb enough... especially on the internet.
