Some Heng Long's drive very well for their price, even just plastic ones, especially now that they have improved their control systems.
The KV1, Bulldog, M26, T 34/85, Sherman, to name a few that have run well for me out the box.
But they aren't perfect, but then again, they're cheap. Even the dearer Taigen and Torro's can be a bit hit or miss, all depends on the experience of the assembler in their factories.

That's very true. The latest version HLs drive very nicely, V6 and it's variations drive beautifully providing the mechanics are free and smooth. Taigen has been smooth and controllable for a while but there are still a few features that are not controlled from the transmitter.
Whatever manufacturer, they all produce the odd badun' so l always expect to need to open them up after initial testing and adjust fittings and lubricate to optimise their running performance. Getting your fingers dirty will help you understand how they function too.

Much appreciated fellas.
As far as driving through water; I see some YouTube videos of tanks driving in several inch deep puddles. Is that possible right out of the box with HL or Torro tanks?

It is not so much the water getting into the hull that is the problem and be assured it will,
An electric motor will run just fine when it is immersed in water,
Rather it is what the water brings,
Grit kills gearboxes,
Dirt will cause arcing across any and all electrical contacts and any small gear driven device will quickly stop working when it becomes clogged with dirt.
Avoid water and long grass and sand they are not good for the longevity of your Tank most especially the transmission,
Good housekeeping with special attention to cleaning and lubricating gearboxes is never a bad thing.
It is a good idea to become familiar with your Tanks interior so that you will spot anything out of the ordinary before a large hole in your pocketbook appears
Which is why I dislike external battery locations.Quite simply it makes you lazy and not bothering to open your Tank up whereas an internal battery forces you to open it up and gives you the opportunity to give everything a very close inspection.

Taigen and Torro are one of the same or two different companies?
Depends what country you buy from but Taigen, Torro and imex are all the same.
Torro are pretty much Taigen with a slightly more fancy paint job and a wooden box with a large price hike. Quite likely they a made in the same factory just painted by different people.
But like midlife I have quite a number of Taigen/Torro most of which are Russian.
