The 56mm shaft length usually is the measurement from the outside of the gearbox. What I will probably do is cut off the smaller diameter inner part and couple to 8mm stainless rod, then add the rest of the internal gubbins.

What about the other end of your made up shaft, would 8mm work there? Perhaps un flanged at that end?

Yes 8mm would work there as well and unflanged would be fine.

You sure you got that right Alwyn, this is a Pershing I just took the sprocket off of, 56mm is the whole length.

Yes you are right DOH!!! Homer Simpson moment, however they are the long shaft ones that I am seeking, the short shaft ones are 45mm long. Those would do the trick nicely.

Cool, I'll take the shafts out some other boxes and send them tomorrow with four of each bearing. These bearings easily fit on the shafts.
