Gosh, you two must be REALLY old.
Where I worked, apart from a surface wipe to make sure there were no contamination that would cause inaccuracies. We had a couple of guys just employed for cleaning the machines etc, so, apart from getting any debris out the way when re tooling or workpiece adjustments, we never had to clean up, even as appendices
Probably cos we couldn't risk damaging our hands. And the cleaners had chain mail gauntlets.
