This may be a stupid question, but if I am tapping in to an existing lighting circuit, why do I need the resistor? I would have assumed that circuit was already supplying the correct voltage.

Standard LEDs (like your red tail lights) have a lower voltage drop across them than high brightness ones (like your white head lights).

Thank you. As I shall need to purchase the resistor, what wattage will I need, please? Sorry to be a pain with these basic question, but my electronics knowledge education stopped in the 1960s.

The normal little 1/4 W ones will do fine. The board wouldn't put out enough current (and the LED couldn't handle enough current) to require anything heavy-duty.
