I'll be modding it in the near future, backlight + SP Basic smartie board.
What firmware do tankers use? Anyone else modded theirs? Seems like ER9x is popular, but there are plenty of choices and wasn't sure if anyone had one specialized for tankers.

Er9x standard from
http://www.er9x.com
Forget about the specialized tanker software. Is a obsolete and abandoned version of er9x. Im sure some people will recommend you it, but trust me,I know what I am talking about.
I did plenty of mods in my 9x...
Replaced all two position switches with three position ones.
Replaced a pot with a 6 position switch.
9xtreme board with sound and RGB screen.
Added two extra push buttons.
Internal multiprotocol module with another 16 channels...
With some work this radio is awesome.
Rad,
I currently use Tanker9X on my 9X radios and have not had a problem with it. I am curious as to what improvements have been made and if you could list what they are. I am trying to determine if it would be worth upgrading my firmware.
Thanks

Hi Dusty, like one and a half year ago I sold a Flysky th9xb radio to a forum member called Dusty (plus something else which I dont remember) It was a radio with a smartie parts board and a switchable cool red backlight and tanker9x installed. Was it you?
If you were the one, in the battery compartment there is a USB plug that will let you flash the radio with the newest firmware very very easily.
If it was not you, and you already have a tanker9x on your radio... How did you flash it? Did you buy the radio already flashed? Does it have a programmer board with a USB plug installed? If you have it, why not to just install the new version and enjoy the new changes? If not, the programmers are very cheap (like 10 bucks) and really worths a try. Solderless instalation, just remove a couple of screws and done.
About the news between the tanker9x and the new software version, are too many to count, but lets say it fixes tons of bugs, and adds tons of new features, and everything looks better and clearer. Having already tanker9x you might not find a lot of differences on the first view. But like I wrote in this thread, the 9x guys release a new test version every week or so, so if the tanker9x is from the year 2014, imagine how many things have been added and corrected.
Anyway if you find it over complicated (which is not) you can happily stay with the tanker9x, but for a guy who has a firmware stock radio flashing er9x is a must, and then is when I strongly suggest to install the last version. If you are going to flash, just flash the best and last version, lol.

Rad,
I have 3 Turnigy 9x radios that I bought years ago. Two of them came from Freaky Dude and one from Kevin of RCTA. They came preprogrammed with Tanker9X and have worked flawlessly so I never had a need to open any of them. I was hoping you could give me an idea of some of the new features that are available with the upgraded firmware so I could make a decision as to whether or not it would be worthwhile for me to invest my time in upgrading. Right now my spare time is limited as I am putting in 12 hours of work every day.
Thanks.

Oh Ok, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Well, Im sorry to read you are pretty buggered with your job... Still dont know if the radios comes with a programmer board or not. If yes, flashing them wont take you more than a couple of minutes. if not, of course you need to install the board first, but it is an easy task which will not take you more than 5 minutes.
If I were you, Id flash the new firmware because I like to have all the bells and whistles, but if you really have no time, you are not missing a lot.

Kevin usually puts in a USB port when he does a radio so you probably have it in at least the 9X you got from RCTA.

Fair enough. No need to be sorry about my job. Retirement arrives in two years. I'll have plenty of time then to indulge in my hobbies. But for now I need to do some research into these bells and whistles.

I wish I could help you more, but the best place to ask about the news are this guys:

They could guide you way way better than me in many ways that I can not explain to you with words, lol.
And congrats for the retirement, time goes fast!!
