If factory-fresh Abrams tracks are covered in bright surface rust, it's not inconceivable that those produced during the war would have as well.

The way I look at it, we're producing an artistic impression of the subject matter. When it comes to matters of colour it's impossible to say for certain what is or isn't "correct", given the limitations of the references available. I'd say if you think rusty tracks suit your camouflage colours, go for it. If you think shiny new tracks work best, that's great too.

I was under the impression that early Tiger 1 Armour was Vanadium and later Molybdenum steel and no longer hardened as the early plates were.
As to Zimmerit it wasn't until late in the War that some smarta*se in an office in Berlin realised that the anti magnetic mine coating was pointless as the only army at that time using magnetic mines against Armour was Germany Dohh.
Shortly after it was discontinued.

You also have to consider that the WW2 tanks you see today have tracks that are some 70 years old. Sadly, colour photos of the tanks in their operational heyday are few and far between. Most of what you see from that era are modern colourisations and therefore represent what the colouriser thought they should look like.
