As a test, I found a figure online and printed it. 32 mins, and and it came out pretty well. On this basis getting a decent scanned WW2 figure should come out just as well. If only we knew a bunch of re-enactors and someone with a full body scanning machine, we could get the actors to pose in all sorts of positions, scan them and have a whole army of printable figures?

Looks good. I read of some software that will turn a series of photos into a 3D image. Not sure how it becomes a printable file. The software was free so I thought I would have a go with one of my existing figures.

I had a go a while back. The trick to getting a good quality scanned image is getting 360 degree lighting, and keeping the camera a set distance from the scanned object. A tripod and a turntable are the way to go. It also needs some way of moving the camera 360 degrees on all planes. Eg The camera needs to see under arms, between legs and into recesses etc. That is the bit where it all gets complicated.
There are numerous programs out there that will process the pics, some are better than others, and as always, the free ones are a compromise and the decent ones are expensive.
The figure that I downloaded had been scanned, and then had to be turned into a 3D figure, the file was generated by the guy, but then had to go through two other programs to get it to a point where it could actually be printed? It shows the benefits of doing that. The original was about 4x the size, I scaled it down to 60mm tall, and it still printed very nicely.

I've got a good camera, a tripod and a turntable, so the only thing it will cost me is some time. I will have a go with some of the free software partly just out of interest.

Did a couple more parts, next up is the undercarriage. I have plenty of room to fit an IR emitter and a flash led next to each in the end of the barrel.
