Warm the pinion up till it glows red then pry it off with a pair of pliers from behind the pinion.
It will slide right off.

Saw a few YouTube vids on pinion pullers..looks simple enough so one is on its way in the post to my door. Good idea tho Aussie for others who don't want to buy a puller.
