Well I tracked (sorry no pun intended) down the turret non rotation problem. The controller is never sending voltage to the motor output pins (Red & Black on the hull connector). If I put 7.2v into the plug the turret motor runs fine, so the wiring & connectors are good. But if I put a meter on the Red & black wires in the controller socket bupkiss when I push the joystick! ARGHHHHH!
(insert protracted random cussin & swearin' here)
Are they even repairable?

Hi Span, unfortunately not. If you are working with a Heng Long RX18 controller then they are readily available from your local rc tank supplier. Someone from your side of the pond should be able to help with an appropriate supplier or see the recommended vendor list. Have you checked whether there is voltage coming from the board on the 8 pin connector, should be pins 1 and 2 on the rhs. if so then your wiring from the board to the hull connector could be the problem, but it does sound as though the motor overloaded and fried something on the board.
Luckily the RX18 is fairly cheap and is a simple swop out/swop in job.
These things are sent to try but once you get the hang of the electronics it's not usually a train smash. might be worth investing in a 360 degree turret swivel and modify the turret to accomodate. i'm no expert on that but there are plenty of guys on here who can help you.
Good luck with the repairs
Alwyn
