Just got back from ALDI and they had some non-slip strip in their workzone section that's intended to be stuck on the edge of steps, so I've bought some and stuck it on the back of my ruler - it looks like it's going to do the trick. I'm still working on my fancy gizmo as I've ordered all the bits, so as they say on University Challenge "I've started so I'll finish". Besides I've printed off all the big bits already. :D

Looks like a good design, Alwyn. I often have the same problem when I'm cutting small bits of thicker styrene sheet, this seems like a much more secure approach than the usual ruler-and-scriber method.
