Re: SLU resurrection
Yes, a long winded process but it does make a difference. I have the manual, all 29 pages pages of it, lol.wibblywobbly wrote:Will do Pete.
One tip for getting the tank to run properly, and that is to run through the tx calibration with everything on the tx set to neutral. I couldn't stop track creep at standstill but ran through it and it's 99.9% cured now.
I hooked up the turret to the board and elevation/rotation works fine. I'll fit a muzzle flash tomorrow and see if I can decipher the instructions to get the recoil working using the Taigen unit. I tried fitting an FRS7 but there isn't enough room if I retain the battery box, it sounds plenty good enough with the Taigen speaker so I'll use that.
If anyone else wants to see what the boards do, here is the online manual. It all sounds horribly complicated but it's all plugs. Only snag is that it isn't plug and play, you need to read the manual and connect everything up to the right locations. The lights are great on tanks as you can switch between them using a standard 4 channel tx, eg you can have searchlights, front and rear lights etc and switch them on and off on the go.

This is a ZTZ99 with a Leopard 2A6 sound module that I did a few years back, the ZTZ uses the same engine, it has coloured led's in the turret gubbins just for added effect. It is running around on long grass, uphill and downhill, with no problems at all.

Re: SLU resurrection
I've now finished installing the SLU in the KT. I can't have a recoil as this is the old SLU and back then not many people were using servo's in RC tanks. The only option would be to fit a Tamiya or Asiatam unit, which I don't want to do as I may well switch the SLU for an Elmod at some point, and that would have servo support. The SLU is designed for airsoft support, but I have pulled out all of the airsoft internals as I don't use it.
I redesigned the wiring loom, so that I could keep the SLU plugs and wires, and the original HL loom, 8 pin sockets etc. To change the electrics all that I have to do is unplug the SLU and plug in whatever board I want.
I also rewired the elevation unit. Airsoft tanks have a switch in a turret hatch. I simply ran a negative wire directly to the 8 pin socket on the underside of the upper hull (it's on a 3 pin plug on mine), and then ran the red wire to the end pin on the airsoft switch. I then ran another wire from the middle pin to the 8 pin live terminal.
I can now switch barrel elevation on and off by just opening the hatch and flicking a switch. This is handy when battling indoors as it means that I won't keep elevating the gun when I fire. I've been meaning to try this out for months, and it works like a charm.
I now have a KT that sounds half decent, and has a muzzle flash etc, but no battle system. It will ok for running around until I get around to painting it and doing the battle damage, at which point it will be ready for an electronics upgrade. Video to follow...battery is on charge, I left it switched on all night....

Re: SLU resurrection
To finish it how I want it, it needs a paintjob, low ratio steel gearboxes, an Elmod board, a battle system, and a servo recoil, but that's all for another day, another thread....

Re: SLU resurrection
Carson at DKLM has sent me the following pics. First thoughts are..how can that sensor board be mounted in a cupola with that tab sticking out of the side?
He doesn't say whether the IR unit is backwards compatible with the old system, so until someone buys one and publishes it on the web somewhere we won't know how it all performs.

Re: SLU resurrection
Hi Rob looking at the photos cant see how it could be done without taking the sensor apart, and fitting extension wires to the sensors and lights have the sensor board inside the turret and extension wires running to sensors and lights fitted inside the cupola, very fiddly to do and the chance of bad connections. Is it possible to use a Tamiya type battle unit with the El-mod if it is might be better to get a Battle unit from Ian (tankbear) he sell them in kit form and can be hidden .

Re: SLU resurrection
If the old version is anything to go by then the battle unit is unlike Tamiya/Clark/Elmod, which means that they aren't interchangeable. Whoever designed the new SLU battle unit has obvisously never fitted one to a tank?? It would be as you say impossible to do without taking the SLU apple apart.
All I will do is run my KT around until I have finished modding it, and then get an Elmod board to go in there. It will take up half the space. I can make my own battle system and hide the sensors. I can then sell the SLU to anyone who wants their Tiger to have decent sounds and use it with airsoft.
