You can ask me too. Im helping you as well.
You can use as it is for your shermsn, but the radio software is ancient and complicated, and is also airplane based. If you install a smartieparts board (its very easy and cheap) you can change the radio software for a fully programable one, and even install specific tank software. With tank templates and things like that.

Sorry Rad, I do appreciate everybody's help but things like changing boards is somewhat scary for a novice like me at the moment. Is it easy to do and once changed do I have to do anything else to it to make it work with my M51?

Cant be easier.
http://smartieparts.com/shop/index.php? ... cts_id=383
There are two smartieparts board, that one, and another super pro where you can do the unimaginable, which is the one I have, but for start the cheap one may be enough for you.
If you dont want to open the transmitter you can buy a turnigy 9xr pro from hobbyking, wich already comes with the software you are going to install in the 9x radio and has nice features like a colour screen, sounds, voices etc etc. I have one and its a great radio.
And no, you dont need to do anything else for your tank. If you want to install extra things (like headlights, I cant believe the super sherman comes with no lights!) Is when you need to program a bit, but is super easy, it takes like 20 seconds.
Some time ago I bought one in the international store for just 50 bucks. But if it is more expensive they worth the money.

I've just worked out what the Mode thing is. I believe it's just the throttle side. Struggling to find the right RF module though to go with it.

The so called Super Sherman is a nice kit. I have shortened the barrel by and inch and painted it OD.

That looks awesome! Nice work!

Mode I means throttle in right stick, mode 2 means throttle in the left stick. Mode 2 is way more common in most of europe and EEUU... Maybe in your country (UK) is the other one, just because you like to do the things the opposite way, lol.
Whathever you buy you can configure your software for having throttle in wathever stick you want, but its better to choose what you want from the beginning, due to one of the sticks has self returning and the other one does not. I use the self returning one for the turret and the other for the motors. Of course if for some reason you change your mind you always can open the radio and change that returning stick.
About the module, there are a lot that works, but I would recommend you to buy this one:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... tion_.html
Just connect it and done. I have it and its works perfect.
Its also a good idea to buy this battery for the radio. Lasts for monts:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _Pack.html
And of course you need the receiver.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... r_V2_.html
Surprisingly they are out of stock, but dont worry, you can use this ones: (In fact, those are the ones I have)
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/FlySky-F ... 7bd439e889
Are 100% Compatible with that radio and that module.
And thats all.
Yes, I know it maybe confusing and a lot of things to do just to play with a toy tank... But for most of us it worths the little effort. Once you ave your tank assembled and you can trigger on million things on it is when you really enjoy it... At least thats me, I even have wagner music on my tanks, three working machine guns, headlights, convoy lights, even a laser diode for aiming then fighting, the limit is your imagination...
