The physical switch can be accomplished just by swapping turrets, but as Rob points out, if you want to upgrade to Tamiya compatibility that's a horse of a different color, and the turret swap will be just the beginning. You'll then have to upgrade your electronics package for Tamiya IR battle capability.

That's correct Gary, but also an easy transition. I've installed an IBU2 and the TBU in my rctank.de Panther. I'll try and get some photo's up later.

You're right, Joe, it's not that difficult, but we don't know how old Nathan's son is, and we do know that difficulty is directly related to age in this hobby. If it's just swapping the turret to get the cool barrel recoil and muzzle flash that's one thing, and I would say (with adult assistance) an 8 or 9 year old could handle that, but an electronics swap might want to wait til he hits 12 or 14. But, I have no kids so I have no idea what I'm talking about. :)

If you don't need the recoil, the standard airsoft turret will be ok. You just swap the standard board out, plug in the new one, and fit the IR apple in the cupola. You will have a fully working IR tank.

If you want recoil, rather than buy a turret, simply buy a Tiger mantlet with a moveable barrel, and install a servo (which will plug straight into the new board).

If you have a Tiger with a metal hull, then you have solid base on which to build a tank.

If cost is a factor, and you are only after IR, then you might want to consider the Darkith unit. You can buy this in kit form, it will work off the standard Tx. The kit version looks complicated but is really very simple to build with very basic soldering iron skills. You can buy an apple (DBU) at the same time.

I have used them, and they work perfectly, assembly took less than an hour, and that was taking my time.

You can add sound if you want
