Depends on the tank. Modern main battle tanks are pretty fast given the weight. The M1 can hit 60kph which is pretty fast for a 70 ton tank. Even on uneven terrain it can probably hit close to 50kph thanks to the suspension.
The ZTZ-99 is a Chinese copy of the T-72 and that can run pretty fast especially since it's lighter than the M1 at under 60 tons. Wot you may want to consider with the T-72 and clones is the reverse speed which is I heard is practically useless, unlike Western tanks that have a max reverse speed around half of the max forward speed.
Heavy WW2 tanks like the Tiger, KV-2, etc would move slower considering that engines back then weren't as powerful as today.

An interesting thing about the "B" series engines and transmissions fitted in both "A" and "B" class vehicles of the 50s and early 60s in the British Army apart from the incredible interchangeable range of engine parts through the whole 4 to 6 to 8 cylinder engines and the 5 speed synchromesh gearboxes was that the reverse gear was separate so that when reverse gear was needed whatever gear you were in you retained and slid a separate lever behind the gear lever back and you were now going backwards in whatever gear you had previously been travelling forward, in effect you had a synchromesh 5 speed reverse as well as a synchromesh 5 speed forward gearbox, Apart from the Engine block and the Crankshaft every other engine and ancillary part both mechanical as well as electrical was interchangeable, an amazing format.
It became a victim of it's own success because when a vehicle fitted with a "B" series engine failed in the field, far too often it would then be used as a donor for other "B" series engined vehicle failures rather than getting repaired and so was declared "BLR" (Beyond local Repair)and scrapped.
The Champ/Saladin/Saracen and a wealth of other vehicles were blessed with the "B" series engine and transmission.

i been searching gear boxes for a few hours.
i see the hl metal gear boxes,and the ultimate metal gearbox....none state gear ratios.
which is better?
i read amazon review about the ultimate gearbox,guy claims it stripped out quickly.
any other gear boxes out there?
For igotit (Steve, right?) and steelbird, here's my two cents worth on gear ratios. PLEASE don't let this topic make you buy as many bottles of Excedrin as I did.

First question, what model tank are these going in? Tiger? Sherman? What?
Second question, what are you gonna do with it? Join a club and participate in IR battles? Mess around with the kids? Shoot BBs at the squirrels? What?

thank you for the hands on explination,i was just looking at the 5:1 and the 4:1 gearboxes.
decision time i guess,i think i would be happy with either set,speed isnt important to me.id rather have low speed and power.
im a rc rock crawler kinda guy,lower ratios mean more low end torque,longer run time and less amp draw from the motor.
going in a hl m41a3 bulldog,mostly messing around with some fpv gear around the yard,mild scale work.

And Steel bird, I can tell you for sure that these are the very best GBs for your Pantiger.
I have five different Tiger tanks, as well as a King tiger and a Jagdtiger, and they all have been converted to four shaft (4:1) steel gearboxes. I also run my Panther G on 4 shaft GBs.

OK, igotit, the M41 is a different animal and that's one of the few tanks that I run the 3:1 GBs in. I have two hull tops for that one, one regular bulldog and one is that crazy anti aircraft thing Rex talked me into, and it runs on a Clark TK22. Here's a video what it looks like with the 3:1. All the bulldog videos at my youtube channel are of the 3:1 GBs, so you might want to consider that before you order the 4:1s. The M41 is a pretty robust yet light tank and it handles low speed much better on 3:1 than a heavy tank would, say like a King tiger or a Tiger One.

OK, wait, you said M14, I thought it was M41, actually it's M4, right? As in Sherman? If it's a Sherman let me know. That comes stock with 3:1 (the Imex does) so I can show you video and that's one tank that I will be putting 4:1s in. Sorry for the confusion.
