As I look at those flat cars I now just noticed they are not just a run of the mill flat car, they were made to haul heavy loads with 3 axle trucks. When I first looked at the picture I thought they were on a standard flat car. Also did not take into account the time erra, and rail cars were over all not as well built
as most are now and you could not just load a tank on any flat car as you most likely could on a lot of modern cars we have today. It was also mabe that those cars were built specificaly to haul tanks and that they were allreay wider than a standard car and a few additional inches was a major factor.

thats right mate, the flatcars were purpose built for heavy Armour, and a couple of extra inches would help a lot, ( or so my wife says )  ;D ;D ;D

I believe the combat tracks were only left on when the tanks were moved "in theater" - no bridges or tunnels to worry about out on the Russian steppes...

As a closet Railway modeller I can confirm the Russian Gauge is wider than the rest of Europe so most likely the wider gauge also translated into wider transporters(?) so there was less of an issue with leaving battle tracks on in Russia/ Ukraine.  My guess is that the tracks could be swapped closer to theatre on the eastern front (anywhere east of Poland), but transport tracks were used exclusively on the home and western fronts for rail transit.  A logistical nightmare whatever.

In terms of manufacturer, I believe all Tiger 1's were built by Henschel at their Kassel factory.
