Wow this is some darn good discussion going on here and firstly answer some critique 2 of the areas i have in mind 1 is a private venture run by the owner and  donations go to a local charity so we would be helping to raise funds for this charity

the second and most promising is a railway run by volunteers on a rail line that was opened and saw a lot of movement during the war as a re-supply line to all the major camps/airfields salisbury plain and as such has a very close military history the same place that holds the war weekends and cant see why a great deal of money would need to be outlayed for this as iam hoping to cut a deal with them to Loan us a piece of land and they allow joe public to pay to watch ;) ;D thus increasing there gate turnover and funds for the restoration of the engines

after reading some of the advice and ideas from you guys  ;) ;) this has opened another 2-3 more possibilities

no it wont happen overnight and yes it will be hard work but after the last weekend we all got together i for one feel this must continue and grow to something "we" all want and this is my main concern

me personally would like to see a similar version to what our american cousins do with the scale everything houses, bridges and foliage

Kind Regards Rob

"at least 1000 square foot i'd say with the ground being sand to avoid damage to tracks."

I've found from experience that sand is not good to run on. With 1/16 models it gets kicked up by the tracks and eventually some of it finds its way inside the tank. Its a real b*ggar to get rid of.
It can also get into the plastic-on-plastic roadwheel bearings on Heng Longs and Wasan tanks and cause accelerated wear.

Hmm didnt think of that Bigpanzer seeming how the large US battlefields use sand.

soil that has been filtered to remove stones would work but be time consuming and VERY messy if it rains (realistic but very messy)

yes but loads of fun cleaning it all out stripping the tank down or taking it to a jet wash LOL

Glad someone pointed out some of the problems with sand, if you run on sand you will have to strip and clean each tank's running gear after every event now if you have 3 tanks and have to do this it will take a lot of time, when I say strip I do mean strip this would include the gearbox and tracks sand wears things out fast, we found the best surface to run tanks on was the soil under the trees as this is broken down leaves and is very fine drys fast and tends not to get to muddy

you could prolly just use normal soil and let the tankers decide how messy the tank gets :P

btw if you find a are where you can put stuff down etc, i'll donate a load of Czech hedgehogs ive been making. they only take about 5-10min to make
