I've found from experience that sand is not good to run on. With 1/16 models it gets kicked up by the tracks and eventually some of it finds its way inside the tank. Its a real b*ggar to get rid of.
It can also get into the plastic-on-plastic roadwheel bearings on Heng Longs and Wasan tanks and cause accelerated wear.

soil that has been filtered to remove stones would work but be time consuming and VERY messy if it rains (realistic but very messy)
