WoT and WT are pretty cool, only played them on PC though. Neither WT or WoT are sims but they're fun games to play with friends. Just be aware of WoT rage, you get some real jerks playing these games you need to be aware off.
I'd say that Premium on WoT does make a difference, getting to Tier X tanks is a hellava grind (I have 13 at last count because I used to do allot of Clan Wars) on a standard free account and at the higher tiers you'll lose money fast if you don't score well. That said, there is no real reason to get to Tier X unless you do CW, a Tier 1 vs a Tier 1 is no different to a TIer X vs a Tier X. Having Premium also allows you to make enough to use allot of Premium ammo. I used only Premium on some tanks, like the E100 or the GWE100 (huge splash radius!)
One good way to make money is to pick up a good Premium tank, which you can then also train crew on, retrain them to another tank of the same class and continue to use and train them on the premium - for instance my E100 crew is also my Lowe crew, my T62A crew is also my Soviet Matilda crew, my FV215B crew is also my TOG2 crew and so on. Some Premium tanks are rubbish, others are pretty good or only pay off if you apply some skill like the TOG2 (all about positioning) and Excelsior (have to know weak spots). Some have favourable or capped match making meaning they only see one Tier higher than themselves which also helps.
