Hi Will be watching this Rob ,looking like another great build .
squaddies can change a challenger engine might take a bit longer but at least they have 3 brews one to start one when the engines out and one when its back in .Unless they are on job and finish then they will be in the Naafi in 15 mins drinking beer.
regards pete

Now it has to get worse before it can get better...
See, I said it would...
If you are wondering what the protrusion is, it is to keep the excavator base in line when I build it. The sides of the crew quarters have been a pain, and will be until it is completed, it is multi-angled and a pig to cut and line up.
I had a bit of a brainwave for the excavator arm. It is 3 sections. I got the inspiration from the AFV crane arm, what is needed is a U-section length of alloy, but the motors inside, and then seal the underside with styrene? It should work and 3/4" alloy is pretty cheap. As I will run out of channels, I had another thought, run the excavator off an RX18 seperately, that will give me 4 motor control.

Rob,
Your not hanging around on this one are you!
This will be done by next weekend, then what are you going to build?
Looking good

Re: Kodiak AEV 3 Armoured Excavation Vehicle
When I started this I thought that the superstructure would be the easiest part. How wrong I was, it is giving me a lot of headaches trying to get all of the angles right and lined up so that everything fits together and still looks like it should.
I have frequently just walked away from it, had a coffee, stared at it, hacked a bit more of this and that about, and then had another go.

Rob, often the best strategy, when your getting your ass kicked, withdraw, regroup, new plan, get stuck in retake control!!!
You can do it.

This is as good as I can make it, its pretty close...I think, lol, I only have a couple of photo's to go on and its really difficult to get the dimensions due to the perspective. The bonus is that as no one else will have a clue what one looks like they will assume that mine is spot on.

Re: Kodiak AEV 3 Armoured Excavation Vehicle
I had intended extending the sloped armour down to where it should be, cut the front out all ready...then discovered that Rheinmetal Industries were completely inconsiderate in their design, and totally forgot that Heng Long would copy it by putting two idler axles right where the armour would go. Soooo...
Had to do the front like this, but will cut this into a hexagon shape to support the excavator base. It needs to be strong and well supported...and bang on dead centre.

Re: Kodiak AEV 3 Armoured Excavation Vehicle
Now I was quite looking forward to buying some alloy C section to see if I could make a 3 section excavator jib. I searched on Ebay...I searched on the web. All I wanted was 3 extrusions that slotted inside each other, a simple requirement I thought? Nope, nothing to be found.
So I emailed my brother who runs a company that uses tons of the stuff, did he know of anyone that makes what I need? His reply was that as far as he knows, the internal width of one section is unlikely to allow the external width of the next smallest size to slot into it, but he will have a look at his suppliers lists tomorrow and see what he can find.
If he can't come up with anything then I will have to resort to a non-existent Plan B, so fingers crossed.
There are pics of the jib on this walkaround, which is the picture set that I am using for this build
