Jarndice,
I hear you but I have to say that every time I walk by 'In The Mood' and the new Pershing redo in the library with Alpha's unique, one piece metal air soft barrels on display, I crack a big and highly appreciative smile. Along with Sassgrunt, several of my tanks owe a lot to him and his generosity and hard work.
regards,
Painless

Painless not for nothing do I regard ALPHA as one of the pillars of this Forum, there was just a cheap laugh available which had nothing in it but fun, our heroes contribution to our advancement in matters armour is matched only by you and a very few others, a lot of us just sit on the sidelines wondering how do you do it and rarely offer our apprieciation. To the theme for a moment, I always understood that if there were Tigers around and no Tank destroyers the plan was to surround the Tiger with 3+ Shermans, one as a decoy while the others fired into the flanks and engine, I would be interested to discover if that is true or legend.

Bill, I did not know a 17 pounder could go all the way thru a Tiger, wow! But they're referring to the scene where the Shermans shells were just bouncing off the front of the Tiger which is why I said I didn't think even a 17 pounder could get thru the frontal armor. But as to what a Tiger could do to a Sherman. I was SHOCKED at the level of pure ignorance displayed by some of the replies saying an 88 wouldn't be able to do what it did to the Sherman.
As to Alpha he is a great guy, has helped me out a bunch! With that said I've gotten great help from ALL of you in fact I haven't found a single person here to be anything other then polite, helpful and supportive which in this day and age is a rare thing to behold.

The 76mm M1 gun firing APC ammo that I think was the one Fury used has armor penetration ratings of anywhere from: 90-110mm of Armor at 30 degrees at 500m.
The Tiger's upper front plate is 100mm at 8% of slope of rolled steel.
So yeah, it's entirely possible for it to have penned the front armor if the Sherman is close, but also possible that it couldn't if the Tiger is lucky, angled hit, etc.
If Fury was firing HVAP if would probably have cut right through the Tiger's front no problem.
The Sherman commonly came with up to 76mm of armor at it's maximum.
The Tiger's 88mm L56 could penetrate 83mm of armor at 2000m.
A Tiger could decimate a Sherman hit from pretty much any angle and range.

Also, so much for the Nazi debate. My family is Jewish and my favorite tank is the Tiger.

Best thing to do is show people graphs, ones from the country they live in showing what they most don't want to know. But some people will always wear tin foil. And always remember what Dr Johnson said: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel". It couldn't be more true in this day and age.

GASP!!!! Oh I'd hate to see what they'd call you!
As to the 76 going thru the front of the Tiger I'm surprised at that! I thought I had read it couldn't because the Tiger didn't use normal armor so the normal scales didn't carry over to the tiger. I forget where I read it but it said something to the fact that due to the alloys and high nickel the Germans used on the Tiger even tho the armor was 100mm thick it reacted like armor that was in the 120mm to even 130mm range depending on the batch. I read that on some site that showed studies from tests done by the Brits on the Tigers armor after the war. Wish I knew where I had seen it so I could link it for you but I've read SO much stuff on the Tiger and King Tigers in the past few months since joining I've about reached the overload point where I remember stuff but I can't remember where I remember it from!

I'm an American and embarrassed to admit it half of the time due to the rampant stupidity that this country is becoming so well known for world wide. There's no telling these morons Bill, thats why I'm not going back to refute the statements made by them toward me as I may as well go outside and try to have an intelligent conversation with one of my fence posts.

I realized this years ago and its been getting worse daily it seems. Anything the govt. or the govt's "experts" say these lemmings believe whole heartedly and won't question at all its sad really.
Common sense is so rare these days it should be considered a super power.
