Ahhh... didn't realize there was so little room inside the tank. I figured with such a large hull it would've had more space. Kind of a shame because it doesn't even look like there's room to put an official Platoon Level Battle Accordion inside there (every Russian tank has to have one. For morale purposes, of course).

I might just disable the smoker until I have the time to tinker around with the internals a bit (which will probably mean "until I'm ready to install steel gearboxes").

I'm still debating whether I want to keep it as a KV-1 (or German captured KV-1) or do a German captured KV-2 conversion with the neat looking (and horrendously unsafe in real life... I mean, can you imagine the horror of having an incendiary round hit the fuze of a 152 HE shell?) shell racks on the back.

Honestly... what I secretly want to do (and you guys will probably think I'm crazy for this) is use the chassis to build an ISU-152BM (?????? 246) with the BL-8 or an ISU-1945 (?????? 704) with the ML-20SM... but as far as I know there's no body kits for those vehicles (which... honestly some fabrication work probably wouldn't kill me, but... the word "probably" is still in there)

Good Evening,
Serge, you are in luck. Juckenberg makes a reasonably priced resin upper for the SU-152 if you want to pursue that build. It drops into place on the HL KV-1 lower and has some neat extras to round out the build like wheel caps, etc. I considered his early model KV-2B Bolshoi Bashniy kit but decided to go with the Torro turret for my KV-2 build. Have fun whichever direction that you go in.
Regards,
Painless

Very little space ..mostly because of the gearboxes and the battery box... the Taigen has more room...but they still mounted the smoker on the side next to the turret rotation motor ... the plumbing is a mystery to me lol

They are very possible ...and would make for a very interesting build if you let us watch :D
Here is the kit Painless is speaking of

looks like they discontinued the early version Kv2... but the German Captured is newly listed :D

Have a great adventure Serge... Image

For some awful reason I couldn't find the Juckenburg store on a regular google search (saw him mentioned in a thread about early Brumbar kits), so thanks for the link (the funeral for my bank account will be held next week)

The Juckenburg is only for a SU-152 which is KV based...... The ISU series I have not seen on 1/16 other than this which appears to be custom based on his IS-2 hull with a custom superstructure ???

Michael,
Thanks, Doc, post corrected. Serge should have fun with either of those builds. This guy, Frank, looks pretty serious into the details like Juckenberg.

Here's some photos of how I dealt with my smoker... it was pretty tough... a lot tougher than I had thought because of the space provisions

ALPHA,

I just noticed the patch work of tubes for your smoker, no doubt parts from various other smokers, but you know that the smoker hose are the exact size as aquarium air tubes. I usually just goto the local pet store and pick up couple of metres of that stuff and then cut it to whatever length I want. They are also softer than the standard one that comes with the tank.

Hi Mike...yeah... I remember a post by you awhile back...thing is if I had done it with all flex tubing ...at that length it would bind up and pinch in some areas... so what I had to do was find something rigid ... a straw from a rubbermaid sipper worked for that... then I just attached the rest of the plumbing with the flex tube...the key to the assembly is that little flat box stuck to the hull... without it you cannot transfer smoke to the exhausts... if you try and attach the kind of nubs on the smoker unit ...they will hit the gearboxes...it was surprising how tight everything is in that tank 8O

Thanks for the tip Mike.

HAPPY TANKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Image

I think I'll stick with a Sutchka for now (SU is just as good as an ISU in terms of 1/16 scale models) and later on I can reprofile the glacis plates and the engine deck to make it into an ISU if I really get antsy (although it might be easier just to go straight on into the 704 from the SU. Sides need to be a bit wider, overall height of the superstructure is a little bit shorter, and the lower glacis plate needs to be extended out at an angle to accommodate the new frontal plate on the superstructure. Most of that can probably be done with card stock without much trouble... though it'd be significantly more fun to try to CNC an upper hull assembly... and make it somewhat more durable when the dog takes offense to its presence in the backyard).

I'd try to get some measurements off of Kubinka or Grabin but... they're not exactly the most friendly people in the world. The curators are nice enough when you're restoring original Russian vehicles, but beyond that they're somewhat cranky in the best of times, and downright hostile if they think you're trying to "Build little toys of Russian armor" (either that or they're still sore about the fact that I neglected to tell them I was Ukrainian before agreeing to participate in that drinking contest until we were four bottles of vodka in and I was still standing  )
