If I could figure out a really good reason to do a Historical build.... I would do one...but I'm going to be sticking with my Girls Und Panzer guns ...The Panzer is the main player in the anime.
What you must remember Jnewboy...is that anime is not just a cartoon...In the case of Girls und Panzer... the story carries a lot of historical base...the artists that did the CG graphics used Tamiya 1/35 scale model kits for reference and inspiration ...so everything is prototypical
Reason I enjoy it... as there is a reminder of what tank battles were all about... but without the imagery of blood and gore that a Historical build carries with it

I understand, I actually enjoy fantasy and alternative history also. I remember a comic book series that was out a few years ago called "Luftwaffe 1946" which depicted girls flying jets like the Ho229 against US B-29s as they bombed Berlin. It was very cool and a fun read. After all the men are dead the girls carry on the fight, seems to be a common theme in alternative history.
I think in GIRLS UND PANZER... the message isn't to leave the fighting to the women... more that girls don't have to be Sugar and Spice and everything Nice ..Adding into the equation that they can be just as productive...and perhaps better women when they grow up...also a suggested story of and alternate way of waging war...which is ...instead of battles filled with blood and gore... you have tournaments just like in football baseball etc... and how that competition..can also form friendships instead of enemies
Well got some new parts in...black steel gearboxes...and a 2.4 gig system...the gears I plan to swap with my Sherman.. it has the white metal gears..the low profile cages will go on the Panzer IV ... using the 2.4 in the Panzer first...as it will be totally experimental ... if it works in this one ... I might consider changing all of my tanks to that system
Alpha,
I think that you will really love the 2.4GHz set and the black steel gearboxes. I am using those going forward from 'Maxene' and will be redoing some of my 'newer' old tanks like the HL KT and the Pershing with them. They just add so much to the tank for a reasonable price. You note that I was really happy to get the Mato version for the 'Mood' ( Thanks again Sass! ) and went to a lot of work to integrate it with the older wiring in the tank. Thank you and your bridge board for making that possible ;o) I will be following your Panzer IV build to see how you do it. I would like a 1/16 version of that one day as well.

Hey Painless... Yeah IMO nothing beats the black steel gearboxes... I have a set in my Jagd .. They are smooth to say the least... and virtually noiseless ...with that said though... I don't mind the white metal boxes ... so far they are pretty strong... biggest difference to me is the tolerances... seems on the white metal boxes they are a little "looser" so a tad noisier ....but the primary reason for the switch on Valerie2 is that she is so heavy... the Panzer IV is a lot lighter... even though I have changed the sprockets and tracks to Taigen metal (beautiful sprockets I might add) and will be adding metal suspension and wheels... I don't think the Panzer will come close to the final weight of the Sherman...so the white metal gears should work fine
It's tough also to deny the "range" increase with the 2.4 ... I get twice the performance out of it ...the sensitivity is better too... My T34s are outstanding runners... reason I'm seeing how the aftermarket thing goes on the Panzer ... If it's simple enough... the system will go into all my tanks for sure
Just an added note... Some might wonder why I have white metal gearboxes in my tanks... and not black steel since I prefer them... It's because they came with the tank...if the came with plastic and I had to decide what to change them out to... they would all definitely have the Black Steel Gearboxes
But for now.... most of my tanks don't exceed 6lbs ... so that's fine for the white metal boxes...they'll give a lot of mileage before failing
Update.... the 2.4 gig went into my Sherman instead of my Panzer IV... Thought there would be compatibility issues as she is an older model... so since I did that... decided to put the Steel gearboxes into the Panzer
Alpha,
There is always cleanup and detailing to do. ;o) You can make it better since the HL uses older tooling. Some of your metal bending would not be amiss.

Thanks Painless... I agree... that's what this research is for... so I can more or less see what can...cannot be done...what can be left stock...and what needs to be changed...will probably take a good look at the loaders ladder on the left side of the tank and see if I can fabricate one so it can be moved instead of it being static...it was one small item that kind of bothered me as I never felt it was something they molded well... but with that said... I still might leave it... as at least the detail is there
I notice your's has the schurzen...is that a Heng long? I almost bought a 1/18 model off Ebay... decided not to because I felt it was going to be too far off to be of any use ..Now with that said... Fabricating those is an idea also running in my mind... just not all that confident that they are all that stable...and might make the tank fragile ...and with "that" said.... it also might be reason to buy another Panzer IV just for that purpose
