Thank you for posting pictures of them side-by-side, Alpha. It's really neat to look at the differences between the two, and remarkable that nearly every part of the two of them are completely different from each other. You did a great job on both builds, and should be justifiably proud. -Mike

You ever browse YouTube Mike...I found something called Tank overhaul ...they restore real tanks... found one on the Sherman...it was pretty informative..they cover the history , design, flaws, amongst other attributes ... what they highlighted was it's universal versatility between the variants..and how the US pioneered the technology

Sorry Painless..I had actually found another...it was in french.. I should have posted it when I found it because now I can't locate it

I completed a conversion to an early M4E3 using a FOV upper and all The rest Is HL.
The only really hard thing about it was fitting the HL stuff in the FOV turret, modifying the main gun shields barrel guards down to more of a correct size and grinding down the barrel to 1/16th scale and drilling it out to take a diode.
The hull top fits almost perfectly on the HL lower after cutting off the front where the bolting bar would be and attaching the one from the HL upper or if your like me and have a lot of odds and ends laying around. use one from Aguilar, just a little filing and the FOV upper will fit right on. Cutting off the attaching posts from the HL upper and mounting them on the FOV upper was pretty easy as was removing the exhaust diffuser and mounting it on the FOV upper.
I didn't do a build thread on it but I hope to post some pictures of the completed tank soon.
I wish I could afford the early tracks and someday I will.

Greetings greengiant.. You had an advantage over me... I only had the upper hull to work with... had to do my own low bustle turret rotor shield and backing... I might have met up with the same demons for the mechanicals inside the turret ... as even though it was the HL turret.. I still had to relocate everything back about a 1/4 of an inch because of my mod to the rotor shield.. so what you see as a result is more or less a kit bash with heavy modification
putting in the LEDs were problematic... as I had to make sure both leads were insulated from the FoV Metal hull....I had the luck of acquiring a resin 3 piece transmission cover...but you are correct... the Hull fit the Heng Long perfectly...used a similar method to fasten the transmission cover.. except I extended the screw down position a little further back and located the points of attachment on the resin piece closer to center .. the cover lined up well with the bottom mounting points so I just drilled and countersunk the piece then used the stock screws...the top hold downs were fabricated with heavy gauge wire and plastic sheet... also drilled... and also using the stock screws to fasten it in place

I have to say it was a pretty tough Modification...it was filled with both fun and frustration ...but the overall result is very satisfying
perhaps you can grace us with a few pictures of your Sherman... I'm particularly interested in how you did your exhausts... I had a relatively tough go of it ...mostly because of the research... zeroed on to this one from a Sherman info page

and came up with this in copper

after paint..it wasn't perfect ..but passable in my eyes

being it was made of copper.. it also acts as an auxiliary antenna...unfortunately the metal body of the FoV blocks a lot of signal... so the two aerials on the turret had to be incorporated into the system as well... future plans are to put a 2.4 system in but I'm in no rush
The tracks came with the tank... and I got the tank during a "black friday" sale ...it was a good deal.. as it was equipped with metal gearboxes as well ..apparently that company doesn't sell any tanks with plastic gearboxes ...so even if you purchased the lowest version they throw the metal gearboxes in

My M4a1 is a Hybrid... HL lower mated to a Mato upper ...something I thought would be easy...but turned out a little more complicated than I had anticipated

I really don't have a huge stockpile of parts like some of the veteran builders have...so I still have to source for pieces... what I do have is a little bit of knowledge of fabrication.. so if worse comes to worse.. I generally will make what I need ...it keeps a build on budget ..and within focus
