Opinions wanted - is this shade of "dunkelgelb" wrong?

this is true ,but still of the mind that toy soldiers is nearer than Tamiya with that tint of green over yellow but each to is own ....wot wot ......

Well the first paint is as green as it looks in the picture.,,every model tank i've ever seen or done that looked right had a sand base and it makes me uneasy historically correct or not. Since all the photos of the real thing in WW2 are b/w of course, i guess we will probably never know.

My theory the Germans had other problems in 1944 besides worrying what shade of base to use so they used what they had even on the KT (which cost them 800,000 RM to make in 1944 per unit.
They got so desperate with bombing and supplies they even took to using the red primer as part of the camo scheme late war, suposedly, just painting sand and brown, or dunkelgelb as part of the combo colors. King tiger production took a huge hit in early 1945 when the Henschel plant was bombed to ruins, i'd guess few or no more King Tigers even made it to the front after that. The link has amazing info

Dunkelgelb is fairly well defined as a colour from old RAL charts and research done by Hillary Doyle, the colour variants you see from colour photos and original vehicles wearing it comes from what the paste was mixed with prior to its application. The issue with replica paint for scale models is its a different shade because of the scale its used at - it's deliberate. The Tamiya XF-60 works pretty well, once pin washes, filters, oil effects etc are applied it looks good. I echo the comments about Vallejo dunkelgelb - it's practically green and their dark yellow wash is even more green. However it has a nice texture and air brushes as well as the Tamiya paints. The AK interactive RAL 7028 is a bit lighter than the Tamiya colour but the finish can be hit or miss, they seem to have quality issues. That said their rust effects and modulation set is excellent.
