Hi Pete,

I'm afraid I don't have any BU and the most I've learnt about BUs is from Darkith's DBU pages (links elsewhere on this site). All I gleaned from that is that the HL one is limited and proprietary. Most are made to be Tamiya compatible, but HL missed (or avoided) a trick here!
I read through the pdfs but can't really say any more than they do already. Simply put their unit is multi-lingual and converts between several different modules allowing different makes to work together.

From what I have seen in the past few years about BUs, they are generally quite simple. They used to be done with discrete logic chips, but using a small microcontroller (e.g. the PIC16F628 that BSU are using) means that you can shrink all that down onto almost one device and give it several protocols (languages) to convert.

Darkith reckoned that HL's infrared diodes were a different wavelength to those used by Tamiya in their mushroom, so I guess the HL mushroom would have to be changed too.

Sorry I can't be of any more help than that.

There's a lot of hurdles to cross yet!

Identify the CPU make/type.
Workout the pinout.
Hope they haven't protected the code.
Suck out the code.
Disassemble and reverse-engineer it.
Find a way to modify it.
Debug the new software.
Put the new code back in.

It's not a 5-minute job I'm afraid!!

Hi Nige,

Me and a mate used to modify the good old ZX Spectrum using an Eprom chip 'piggy backed' onto the existing ROM chip, I think you can guess why.  ;)
I was thinking that the same method could be used on the HL board allowing you to run your own modified version of the HL code.

Good Luck

Would be nice to get rid of the reverse jerking when the cannon fire button was pressed but without adding aftermarket items don't think it will be posible. Would be nice to combine the barrel elevation and the airsoft motors into one unit to raise and lowere the barrel with an up and down movement of the stick

Hello Nigel,

Are you familiar with this guys work. he has worked with the code to make his IR system, do more then just disable the tank! It also give you a true proprtional, plus breaks up the signal, and you can disable the super spin and the heng long rock!

Hi Blitz,

Yes, I have seen Darkiths web pages. Very interesting stuff he has done.

Unfortunately, I've not had time the last few months to look at the HL RX-18 that I bought a while back now. It's still just lying there on my bench wired up to a test board and a few loose motors. I've had a big DIY job on at home and now have Tony (Tiger205's) Tiger to rebuild for his widow when I get some time. Unfortunately he was in the middle of a complete rebuild when he passed away. Plus, it's all ElMod stuff and I know nothing about that. I just know standard HL stuff and standard digital-proportional RC.

Hey Nige,

Plenty of guys here to help out with any questions on the EL MOD install! The older version can be a bit confusing, but when done right it makes for a killer tank! Keep us posted!

Hi chaps,

Thanks for that. Still DIY'ing frantically, so not much opportunity to unpack Tony's tank bits yet.

Can someone give me a good shortcut to wiring diagramss for hen long leopard 2a5 tank. I am having turret problem of it wont traverse left will only traverse right. If I had the diagrams I might be able to figure out what I need. Also how do I tell what kind of board it has.
