Good Morning,
You may may have heard this already and if so I apologize in advance. The way I have seen the milliput welds done most often and with the best results is to wet your fingers and roll out a thin bead of the stuff and lay it into place where it will be used as a weld. Take up your tool of choice then and make your weld marks before the putty dries too much. Your drums turned out very nicely with your initial method as well.

I apologize before hand... as it probably isn't my place to say anything... but as far as I know... fuel/ oil drums were never welded... it wasn't cost efficient at the time... and still isn't today... the material the barrels were made of were more suited to crimp / solder seals than welding ... as the gauge of steel used could leak if brazed or welded...soldering was not only cheaper and faster.... it was more conducive to mass production...even jerry cans were crimp soldered
