Gun blue seems to work but will spend more time on it tonight. How long would I need to let it dry ? I use the the sponge and it will take too long so will switch to brushing/painting it and see what happens. Is the brush a write-off after this ? Or should I dunk the whole thing in ?

Both gun blue and Kurust use phosphoric acid as the active ingredient so anything similar should work to take the shine off the tracks but gun blue actually gives it the best finish due to the colour it gives them.

Gun blue it is. I tried it last night with a cloth and it did the trick. I didn't bother washing it off as it doesn't seem to have any residue at all. Thanks all for your advice. Here is what I settle on for the time being.
