I'm a relatively new "tanker", this week actually.
I have pair of Heng Long's (Bulldog and M26) - I personally like the idea of a upgrade over time.
In saying that I already have on order replacement speakers, new metal gearboxes, metal tracks.
Whilst I have to agree that metal hulled tanks are more robust, most of Tamiya's off road racers use plastic chassis and I've seen those jump a couple of feet and they do not snap in two.
I only joined this forum as on certain other forums the consensus was "do not buy Heng Long as they are crap" which many put down to complete snobbery - at least here the chinese tanks get a fair outing and after seeing some of other peoples work the cheapo tanks can and will hold their own.
With so many companies making addons for the Heng Long Tiger you could upgrade your tank from now until Christmas....2016
(BTW if this message remains here until 2016 add three years to that date!)

Greetings white tiger,
I got a 1:30 scale Heng Long Sherman very recently, also being a new tanker, I have never had so much fun with a little model (being into boats, planes and trains, I am off the opinion bigger is better!) My tank is reasonably reliable, and surprisingly robust! I love it to bits, I have to agree with Scoopey, other forums seem not to give the HL tanks a fair hearing and I am really getting into playing with it...

Just little footnote...
If you have a Heng Long/Taigen and want better mechanics then there are the Walterson gearboxes.
As for electrics the guy at RC Tanks Australia has loads of addons which work with hobby grade RC transmitters..the popular one being the Turnigy 9x as you can mod the firmware. He even in the process of creating a replacement for the Heng Long RX18 MFU called the Taipan.
Also Clark boards combined with a hobby grade transmitter/receiver work as another alternative.
I appreciate the Tamiya's are great and high quality stuff but with a lot of work by the time I have fully upgraded my 4 tanks with barrel recoil, new electrics and gearboxes metal parts it will still work out cheaper than 1.5 Tamiyas. You just got to do a lot of shopping around,

The guy in Australia is Kevin Grannum,
He has his own you tube channel rctanksau with loads of tutorials for his boards and other mods.
Evne better for those folks that want to get their hands on a nine channel transmitter namely the Turnigy 9x go to the Hobby King website direct.
The stock firmware they come with is well crap really and to reprogram them you need to get hold of a programmer board (about £10) and do a bit of soldering...the user created firmwares apparently push the boundaries giving the 9x far more potential, enough to rival the rather more expensive rivals.
I konw to some the idea of soldering attachment might not be too your taste so..good news Pyramid Models stock an add on unit (made in the US under the Smartiepants name) which you just screw in place over the board - no soldering - and then you can attach the programmer to that, and guess what if you have one of Kevins RC2HL boards he's got a custom "tank" firmware for the 9x!
