I'll be putting my Stug build up on the Heng Long section as soon as its finished. (I always post my builds retrospectively so I don't confuse people with all the mistakes I make!)

I would hold off until about March or so. Asiatam is scheduled to release a full metal upgrade that includes a new metal tub, metal rollers, metal struts, metal tension adjuster and metal sprockets and idlers. It will also have the return rollers placed where they should be. It will be a lot like the metal tub Brel is working on with his Tiger.
Or if you can't wait and want machined parts (versus cast parts), Wecohe has the same thing, albeit at a much higher cost.
In the meantime, work on detailing the upper hull.

I just bought these brass detail items from Welsh Dragon Models for my StuG. The large complicated part on the left fits under the rear exhaust shield, while the two screens in the middle fit on top of the air intakes. I assume the two frames then fit over the intake screens and the brackets are bent over and fixed to the side. It comes with some bolt heads to fit the holes. They arent any instructions though so does this sound correct? Anyone fitted these to a StuG or Pz III?
The only problem i can see is the exhaust shield will block access to the smoke pipes, so i wont be able to top up the smoke oil. May need some well place damage holes in the mesh to get around that.

With my PzIII, I had some "stickers" in the box that were meant to represent the mesh; the tops of the air boxes were smooth. With my Stug, it would appear that they have "moulded" a form of mesh to the top of the boxes (at least that what it looks like on mine!) I intended to do the brass job on my PzII and the Stug as they progressed. I did have doubts about the rear grille, especially as it is almost out of sight. Then again, is it necessary (or was it fitted) with the alternative exhaust that is available?

Thanks Andy, my Stug has the moulded grill effect which i'll probably rub down with a bit with sandpaper and then fit the brass grills. Im just not sure about fitting these frames over them as i cant find any reference with them on ::) Same with the exhaust mesh, its not something you're going to see much and will probably be more of a pain once fitted... but you know how it is when you're looking for stuff to fit on your new toy, I couldnt stop myself. In hindsight its not really worth buying but now i have it i'll stick it on. Again its a very difficult area to find any reference pics for.
And no, if you're fitting the other exhaust system with the external muffler this mesh will need cutting a lot so really not worth it.

Nice Stug Chris I wouldn't worry too much about the position of the return rollers you can't see them for the schurtzen.

Nic, I've found a couple of photos I used for reference with my PzIII. You can just about see the metal frame underneath the mesh. Hope it helps.

If you are going to put the on/off, volume and power switches under one of the 'mushrooms' on the engine deck you can
drill a hole in the top of the smoke box, glue a piece of pipe in ( home brew siphoning pipe is spot on ), and use that to
top up the smoke oil. Then you wont need to damage the mesh screen.
