1 Kompanie PzAbt 101 Tiger 131 Walter Hahn Project Diary

Post by Wildboar44 »

This thread is reconstructed due to the pictures being removed by a third party host in 2016.The layout and wording may change from the original. 31.10.2019 Update :: Photo Thread restored 11-12-2019
Tiger 131 101st PzAbt
Tiger 131 101st PzAbt
Tiger 131 101st PzAbt with Untersturmfuhrer Walter Hahn at the command passing through Morgny village on the D316 heading West toward the River Seine. Shortly after this picture was taken the column was attacked by Allied fighters.

I have always liked this image of the Tiger 1,if anyone was to ask who has not seen a tiger, i would show them this picture. I have only recently discovered where the picture was taken in the tiny village of Morgny France. I had a chance recently on a business trip to drive over to Morgny, not surprisingly, the village has changed very little since 1944. The commander sitting atop the turret is Walter Hahn, what happened to him and Tiger 131 I would be very interested in finding out.

The purpose of this project is to take a previously modded Tiger 1 and try to replicate as close as possible Tiger 131, as well as undertake a few reliabilty modifications I have been waiting to do. Once it is complete , we will take this HL Tiger over to Morgny and photogragh it in a sort of then and now R/C tank style.

So here it is ...... Taken out of the box Christmas day a few years ago by our 10 year old Son , it started out as a plastic tracked ,nylon gearbox smoker & BB. within 5 minutes the cry went out "Dad... the smoker thingy has stopped working "! Boxing day it was run through every muddy
puddle and obsticle in our local woodland park. By close of play on day 2 one snapped track and a stripped nylon gearbox !
How it all started
How it all started

The first build circa 2012
So after it happened, you know when you think you will add a few extra's and make it more rugged ( and then the spending gets out of hand !.Fitted with Modellbau track adjusters and metal track & gearboxes, painted and upgraded with the more common add on parts its ends up being very different to how it started.

Never knew where mudguards went missing

So that is the basis for this project, a HL long Tiger which already had the following modifications applied by the time I started the Walter Hann build.

Metal Early model metal tracks and idle/drive wheels
Modellbau original track adjusters
Metal Gearbox (HL)
"Rubber" zimmerit stuck on to hull and turret
Fine detail flashing turret and hull MG
Metal Cupola and MG
Single Headlight
Smoke Launchers removed

So now begins the stripdown and rebuild .................................................................

Ta for now.

Wildboar,

Nothing wrong with another Mid Prod Tiger, if you need any ref pics or schematics, feel free to ask. I've collected a bit during my Mid Production build. Here is a colorized pic of your project. Enjoy...

I have always been partial to this Tiger, as Walther and I share the same surname (no relation, though). Although it is one of the eventual projects on my build list, I have not started it yet. There is another build of it on a French tank modeler's forum that you might enjoy looking over. http://rc-panzer.xooit.com/t5553-TIGER- ... -Video.htm He added the gun travel lock at the rear; which I am not sure was 100% correct for this vehicle. Of course, I'm not sure that it ISN'T correct, either.

Thanks Derek, I thought I had seen a colour enhanced image somewhere but could not find it.I was looking at the colour of the turret numbers, they seem Red, although i have seen from several sources that these were green/white outline for 1st Kompanie, I must say when trying to find information, every question asked generates several more !.

Do you or any other forum member know the correct colour for the dust cover over the muzzle brake ? It looks to be a dark colour, Black, dark grey or Green ?

Were the C hooks oversprayed with camo colour or painted a separate colour of there own ?

Thanks once again :) Ps... Love the incredible detailing you and tanks-for-memory are putting into your Tigers , me doing that sort of detail will be like asking Ghandi to run the 100m in flip flops !

Thanks for link sassgrunt , Its good to get help assembling as much information as possible. I am not sure if this vehicle had a travel lock but I will assume
it had one ... buiding one will give me kittens ! lol

Yes, I don't relish the thought of how my attempt at a travel lock would probably turn out. Every time I look at the travel lock that Derek built for his Tiger; it leaves my jaw hanging open. -Mike

Hey dude,

Have you seen this pic?

Image

In ref to the C Hooks, I have seen pics where they have been camo'd with the tank and just painted the Dark Yellow. Never the bare metal as depicted in the colored prints but you never know. I asked a question awhile go if anyone knew if they were issued primed or bare metal but got no answer.

In regards to the Muzzle Cover, not to sure, the pic looks green but not sure if that was added by the artist who did the work. Maybe some of the more advanced and knowledgable members will chime in, the tank that I'm doing is also sporting one.

Anyway buddy, if you need anything, drop us a line.

Derek

P.S. Mike, stop it buddy, your making me blush. :haha:

Thanks for the pic Derek and ifo on dust covers & C hooks, I was hoping someone else would confirm 1 Kompanie Turret numbers .

By accident searching last night i came across the same set of pics on a German website RCTANK.DE , I will hope to purchase the decal set for 131 they list on thier website http://www.rctank.de/product_info.php?c ... ts_id=1362 . Seem pretty good .

Any members dealt with RCTANK.DE ? ..... unlike UK based 1/16th specialists ... they dont list many items "out of stock " that itself seems unusual ?
