FRAG 1/16th & 1/18th Vehicles and Accessories

Post by Panzerpaul »

Fellow Tankers: I'd like to start this sub-topic off by sharing what FRAG has done to enhance its battles with scale WWII vehicles and accessories. Many of these items can be found on Ebay. All of the following comes from an article I published in Oct 2010.

Generally speaking, 1/16th scale vehicles, accessories and dioramas are not plentiful for our WWII battlefields. Fortunately 1/18th & 1/15th scales provide excellent options, and when combined with 1/16th scale, gives the RC tanker an adequate enough selection. In addition to stock items, one can also scratch build much more through the use of RTV molds and resin castings. This article will address trucks, jeeps, kublewagens, halftracks, weapons carriers, motorcycles, staff cars and various artillery, antitank and Pak guns……for 1/16th battlefields.
Fellow Tankers: I'd like to start this sub-topic off by sharing what FRAG has done to enhance its battles with scale WWII vehicles and accessories. Many of these items can be found on Ebay. All of the following comes from an article I published in Oct 2010.

HALFTRACKS: In recent months, Mato released the 1/16th RC American Halftrack made by WSN, but prior to this, only the non RC halftrack kit by Trumpeter was available. As far as German Halftracks in 1/16th scale, there wasn’t anything for a long time……unless you were lucky enough to find the 1/16th 251/1, Ausf D resin kit from Jim Shirley Productions (long OOP). So for the most part RC tankers have been using the American and German 1/18th scale halftracks by 21st Century Toys, which look pretty good. They come in a number of color schemes.

A couple years back however, a German modeler started selling resin kits of the 1/16 scale Sd.Kfz. 9/1 FAMO, and the Sd.Kfz. 251 Halftrack, both in a variety of options, and both fairly expensive. These can be found on Ebay from Store Junkenburg.

AMERICAN JEEPS: The only real source for 1/16th scale American jeeps is from Danbury Mint. They made a plain style (w/ & w/o canvass roof), both with a mounted 50 cal MG and one with rocket launchers on top. FRAG takes these models, adds stowage and uses 1/18th soldiers, shaping and gluing them in a specific position, then filling in the joints with putty and painting over. Verlinden Productions also offered a 1/16th cast resin Jeep kit some time ago.

STAFF & OTHER CARS: In this category on the German side we find the Kublewagen, which comes in 1/18th scale from 21st Century Toys and in 1/15th from Verlinden. The later company also offered a resin kit of the Schwimmenwagen. There are a few 1/18th scale die cast cars of the 1930-40s which work well for German General’s staff cars. Search Ebay for results.

On the American side we find another 1/18th scale 21st Century vehicle for generals. Its Patton’s 3rd Army field staff car. And there are other suitable die cast cars in 1/18th such as a 1940 Cadillac, which would be appropriate repainted Army green with stars on the side.

TRUCKS: FRAG has been using Highway 61 die cast 1/16th scale trucks from the 1940s era, and converting them to a military look. This requires stripping existing decals, modifying beds and sides, adding canvas tops and repainting as desired. Highway 61 offers GMC, Ford and Chevy trucks. From these you can make 2-3 American style trucks, and since the Nazis took over the German Ford plants during WWII, you can make a Ford style German truck as well. Also, Highway 61’s flat bed truck makes a decent looking German ammo truck. FRAG hopes some day to find European die cast model companies who make 1/16th WWII German style trucks……such as the Opel Blitz, MAN, Mercedes Benz, and others. The other missing US truck is the 1&1/2 ton Deuce, the standard 3 axel US cargo truck, which no die cast company makes.

A couple years ago 21st Century Toys produced a 1/18th scale German cargo truck based on one shown in an Indiana Jones movie. Weathering with chalks and adding stowage makes the model very creditable.

MOTORCYCLES: An Italian company named Polistil made a 1/16th BMW R75 Motorcycle with sidecar. It must be disassembled and repainted entirely if you desire a European campaign color. It originally comes with Afrika Corp paint and decals. The only American style US Army cycle is a 1942 Harley Davidson WLA, but it is 1/18th scale by Maisto.

OTHER MILITARY VEHICLES: 21st Century Toys also offered a couple of WWII light military vehicles. These were the 1/18 Ultimate Soldier Dodge WC51 3/4 Ton Weapons Carrier and the WC63 Dodge 1.5 Ton Weapons Carrier.

In addition to the above, within the last couple years a German company called Xion began offering 1/16th scale Andrew Design kits for a variety of small German vehicles. All are RC equipped. There is quite a bit available (or soon to be released), but a bit pricey.

As accessories to these kits, Xion offers the following along with a variety of boxes and figures.

ARTILLERY GUNS: FRAG has found a variety of 1/16th artillery guns, all German, and most made from cast resin, in a kit form. We have also used parts from the Verlinden 20mm Flak 38 to scratch build a Quad 20 mm Gun. Completing a scratch build project, requires making RTV molds from existing parts and from hand made masters (usually out of styrene) and adding brass tube and sheet as required. The manufactures we have found are as follows:

Verlinden (1/16th):
Kit 656 German 20mm Flak Gun
Kit 684 German 37mm Pak 36 Gun
Kit 970 German 88mm Flak Gun
Kit 1031 German 37mm Flak 37 Gun
Kit 1084 German SIG 33 Infantry Gun
Kit 1093 German 150mm FH18 Field Gun
Kit 1320 German 75mm Infantry Gun

1/16th Quad 20mm Flak Gun hand made by using
some Verlinden kit 656 parts and hand crafting
the rest. Soldiers are 1/18th scale:

21st Century Toys also produced an 1/18th scale German 88 mm Gun w/ carriage, which goes very well with 1/16th scale:

A company called Denix also made a 1/16th scale cast metal (pewter) 88 Flak gun (now OOP):

Lol yes I have been looking for some 251's as well, for our club scenes, and just recently some guy in the states has been outbiting every one and buying the lot. they have been fetching the same price as the few new ones still out there, about £80 + postage makes them a wee bit expensive for our club.
opp's you said get off the road
