RX 18 a good idea to dramatically improove cooling or not ??

Discuss the good old Heng Long electronics here, whether its mods on them or anything else, it goes here!

RX 18 a good idea to dramatically improove cooling or not ??

Post by Dietrich »

Hi Guys,
The RX-18 circuit board as we all know really needs at least 1 cooling fan to make sure that it continues to work.
The Older Heng Long Cuircuit boards although they used a different type of electronic motor controller ( FET MOSFET ?? )
were ALL fitted with heat sinks, which were srewed to the electronic parts .
I realise that the RX18 board uses different speed controller parts but they STILL need to be cooled.....So my question is this if I made up a 'Heat Sink' from old computer parts coated both sides of the speed controller chip in the nonconductive special computer chip heat paste and then Gently Clamped the heat sink onto the 4 speed controller chips.....would this help ????
Burnt-Board-Rx18.jpg
This picture is from Athelstan...so I hope that he doesnt mind me using it as it shows the parts perfectly

To me it seems that it must be of great effect...the cooling area will be dramatically increased and there wil be no risk of shorting anything out with just incase a bit of the paste squeezes out and touches any contacts.
What Do You Guys Think......it seems obvious that it WILL help as the speed controllers are in a very confined space....or am I missing something ???

Hey Dietrich,

Where did you get the photo? I know my memory is bad but I'm almost absolutely sure that that's not one of mine

As far as cooling goes the 'thing' that springs to mind is the RAM heatsink/coolers you find on the market. Some years ago these were almost solely available as aftermarket clip-on parts but now many high-speed RAM modules ship with pre-fitted heatsinks.

What's my point? Well, as with most things there'll be people who look at 'heatsink'd' RAM and buy it because "Oh that must be better" but there must be some validity in their use or the manufacturers wouldn't bother wasting the R&D and resources. From my (albeit rather feeble) experience with overclocking computer parts I know how much difference even a passive heatsink can make to something generating heat so I imagine it is certainly worth a try - especially given your know-how when it comes to making things. Now, just make a miniaturised water-cooler

I may have some old heatsinks in a box somewhere - I'll reply to your PM accordingly!

Hi Dietrich,

I was thinking along the same lines of gluing some thin copper strip to the controllers to conduct heat away. I say copper as I understand it conducts heat better than your typical aluminum heat sink.

I just wasn’t certain if the glue would be more of a insulator and make things worse, or not strong enough and come loose in action and short something else out. Maybe it is possible to glue/bond to the plastic lid and when pushed on makes sufficient contact with the controllers to be effective.

I do think it is a good idea.

Hi tankbear
I am glad the the idea woks in thory...but instead of glue try to use the heat paste used on computer chips and just reile on a slight clamping of the heat sinks to carry the het away from the power controllers.

Nice!

I was wondering why I needed to install a fan.
Now I know. :D
What I'm going to do is just wrap some pennys using insulation tape(if the pennys are small enough, I'll use a strip of metal if they arent) and than stick them to the chips using heat paste.

The ideas the same for how they cured the ring of death on the xbox 360.
