Great, great, great granddad not so great
Great, great, great granddad not so great
I may have left off a great or two. Maternal Grandma's family was active in the American Revolution so, when their side lost, they fled to the Bahamas. One of my direct ancestors owned part of "Hog Island" for his coaling station, becoming an owner of multiple ships. Using this as a base he ran materials into the Confederacy, not something I am proud of. "Hog Island" has now been renamed "Paradise Island", the modern location of the Atlantis resort. And I didn't even get a t-shirt. My brother found the documentation for all this in the Naval War College in Rhode Island while doing War College and getting his Masters degree in 'Strategery'. Later the family started a pineapple plantation which eventually failed when Dole figured out how to grow and can pineapples in Hawaii much cheaper, killing Bahamian pineapple industry and forcing the family back to the US. As an aside, I am distantly related to the first prime minister of the Bahamas, a guy named Sands.
