I'm looking to an have an LED to light airsoft tracer bbs - and your post came up. Did you (anyone else?) ever get around to doing that? Would be great to get some tips.
Hey, sorry to get back to you so late but I haven't gotten around to doing this yet. If I do I will snap some photos and share. My plan was to use IR or UV LEDS and put them either alongside the feed tray facing the bbs, or drill holes and glue the leds in the bottom of the BB ramp. I'd wire them in to use the power from the smoke cannon heating element.

That tanks looks gorgeous! Since my last post I grabbed myself a Torro IS-2, I'd LOVEEEEE to have a t-34 that looks as nice as yours 8O

Thanks for the warm welcomes everybody! I haven't been on much since my last post as I had a lil shakeup in employment and actually went back to school. As a result I had to go a lil easy on the tanks and take a break, but luckily I just started a new job a couple weeks ago. By the time I took a break I also picked up a Heng Long Panzer III, StuG and a Torro IS-2 :D, so I have many modifications and tweaks to do now that I'd love to share. I also now need an American and Russian Light/Mediums tanks to counter the Panzer III/StuG, and a German and American heavies to contend with the IS-2 :) I wanted to know how Taigen did bb/servo recoil so I picked up a Tiger late turret. I plan to build a Tiger 1 E using the Heng Long CNC Tiger lower chassis, although I may get it the full metal tank from heng long in the same Grey as my Panzer III and paint it up with the metal turret later on.

I hope the further education and new job and etc., prove to be great moves! I see from your workbench that you have skills far exceeding mine. I am curious for about the idea of tracer BBs. Will the LED light up the barrel as the BB exits? (Despite all the wizardry I see here on RCTW, I cannot imaging an LED and battery actually inside a BB. :haha:)

The IS-2 seems not to have gathered a great deal of attention here on RCTW. I have a Torro IS-2s and need to pay more attention to it myself.

It's one of the few "other" model tanks that I'm actually interested in.

Thx for that.

Read the forum on "Painting and Weathering".
Also there are videos on YOUTUBE that may help.

I think of my tanks as an empty canvas.
Maybe you will too when you're ready.

Thank you very much, so far so good!! I started my new job last week and will be moving into my own apartment this weekend. I had rented a room at a friends house for the last couple years, now I'll have a lot more space to work at home. While unfortunately that workbench in the photo is no longer mine(tech bench at my former job), my new place has ample room that I'll be able to use for my airsoft, WW2/Cold-War reenactment, Soviet wood rifle stock replication and of course tank projects!

The IS-2 is a great runner, looks gorgeous and the sound pack on it is awesome. The metal body is super heavy and feels solid, the paint job/weathering from the factory looks really good too, I will probably leave it that way for now. The only downsides are some of the other parts of the electronics. I am not a huge fan of the mainboard, it is pretty stark compared to the Tk7.0s that I've gotten used to. The board doesn't handle the tank as well, I found it harder to get it moving around realistically, especially at low speed. I also am not a huge fan of the stock smoker for the exhaust or cannon. The cannon smoke worked pretty good for a bit but it's been weak lately. The exhaust smoke has always been barely noticeable, even indoors. I think I want to replace the cannon and exhaust smoke with heng long units, and maybe consider the Open panzer board to get more adjustability while retaining the sound. I also found that even with the IR battle signal converter for the Taigen/torro tanks, they still can't reliably battle with a heng long when I tried.

They are essentially biodegradable glow in the dark BBS that glow green for a few seconds after exposed to UV light. You would be able to fit this in the turret where the bbs load in, so the light would likely not be visible from the barrel. I have seen someone on one of the facebook groups have figured out how to fit small enough leds into the barrel to be able to pull off Flash, smoke and bb at the same time.

The tracer bbs have been in use with airsoft for the past 10 or so years and have gotten really popular! I use the tracer bbs alongside muzzle devices that replicate muzzle flash and the replicas themselves also have replicated recoil. The same tracer function could likely be more easily fit in a tank turret. Here is a quick clip to show what the functionality looks like on the full sized airsoft.

No problem, I'll make sure to check back or better yet make a new thread for when I work on and complete that project! Have a good one :D

I always get compliments on my IS-2, but for some reason mine likes to throw tracks which is strange because my Taigen based KV-1 tanks don't throw tracks and the tracks are very similar. The Clark TK40 in it seems to shutdown down a lot even though it has the right ohm speaker. I'm thinking of changing it over to a 7.1 system since it has already been converted to servo recoil.

I am somewhat isolated here, so don't use the IR battle function at all. Yet I always thought BBs were fun once or twice, but then ho-hum. Now seeing the tracers I got all excited about BBs. Oh what fun they would be!
