1/8 Scale HL Abrams

Post by Jib »

Mulling over purchasing HL’s 1/8 scale Abrams. I really like Abrams, ArmorTek doesn’t make one, I wanted something larger scale. I have HL’s 1/16 scale Abrams that I have heavily modified (mostly the electronics), as well as a couple of 1/16 Taigen/Torro tanks.

Does anyone have this tank, or any advice, or know anything about it before I pull the trigger?

Nope. I know of no others, but damn that tank is expensive.

Yeah, perhaps I have more money than sense, but I also don’t have machining tools, a 3D printer, or more importantly the time.

If I do get it I’ll be sure to do a write up on it here though.

I know all too well the itch of a large tank. If there was a decent set of Abrams STLs, I'd print one in 1/6th scale. I may settle for a Merkava MK3 as it's a damn cool looking tank and there are files in 1/10th I could scale up. I haven't really seen much about the HL 1/8th Abrams, but yeah definitely share with us if you buy one.

"[P]erhaps I have more money than sense": Well, Jib, you are ahead of me: I've neither. But, hey, spend away so we can see photos. :P

It also bugs me that some of what I would consider to be issues that the 1/16 Abrams had are still in the 1/8 scale model. Chief of all would be the improper timing of the barrel recoil, and the barrel itself recoils in the wrong place compared to the real thing. Somewhat easy to fix on the 1/16 model, I could hopefully fix the recoil timing, but not the way the barrel recoils. For the price it would’ve been nice if they fixed these, but it looks for the most part all they did was scale up the 1/16 model. I’ll keep thinking on it. For the price it would be nice if it didn’t need “fixing”.

Yep, just got confirmation that the receiver is integrated into the MFU. Boo!

However, the sales rep said she would talk to their technicians to see if they could modify it to run with an external receiver! So fingers crossed again!

At the least, Jib, HengLong (or the retailer) should deduce a fair amount for you to install your own MFU that runs just the way your want. (I.e. smoking exhaust, smoking gun, flash, IR battle, varying gearing, lots of sounds, precise steering, moving commander and driver, serves drinks...)

Yeah I’ll have to get a little drink tray for is a La RotJ R2D2.

So I pulled the trigger on it today. Said it’s in stock and should arrive in 7-15 days. Although I’m disappointed about the MFU situation, I think I have found a work around in Open Panzer, and I am excited to open it up and see what’s under the hood.

Will report back here once it arrives. Going to have to get a truck ramp.
