Re: HL Panzer. III
I have a Panzer III from HL. I went for an Afrika Corp theme.
I really "sanded" it up.

I feel they just look better in DAK colors when discussing the Early version. So, Let's see your version.michaelwhittmann wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2024 5:24 pm I have a Panzer III from HL. I went for an Afrika Corp theme.

Re: HL Panzer. III
LC Curran: see my pix. I like my tanks cruddy. As you can see I stink with decals.
a few question
1) what version of the Panzer III is this?
2) on the starboard side, what is the long rectangular box and piping on top of it?
3) I need to replace the 2 rear exhaust pipes. Mine broke. Any idea where I can get replacements.

Re: HL Panzer. III
The "long rectangular box" and the "piping" are two of the items that help make this a Tauchpanzer. (Please pardon me if in what follows I tell you what you already know.)
The Tauch part means "dive": at one point the Corporal Führer thought he might use Panzer IIIs for a seaborne invasion of the British Isles, his Fall Seelöwe, Operation Sealion. So he had some Panzer IIIs and IVs designed so they could function for a bit of time underwater (not just to tiptoe ashore, but down under water). The imagined invasion never occurred (
), but I have heard that some Tauchpanzer were used to cross the Bug River during the invasion of Russia in June, 1941.
The long rectangular box looks like a squared-off log, perhaps intended for "unditching" (i.e. getting out of muck and mud). The pipe is a representation of a kind of snorkel, though I have not yet found a photo of the pipe in just that form. Various sealant materials and gaskets were used to seal the tanks against leakage. The Panzer IIIs and some Panzer IVs were tested with such diving gear and actually imagined (and tested..."any volunteers? Ja, du, Heine!")
Here's the URL for a video with a number of photos and a narrative with explanation. There's lots more to be found online using a good search engine.
